This is a Locum Consultant post in Intensive Care Medicine, based at Whipps Cross Hospital.
This is a full time 10 programmed activity (10PA) post. The focus of the job plan is on the intensive care and high dependency units. Those applicants with an Anaesthetic background would also cover lists in theatres. Those with an Emergency medicine background would cover the emergency department. Those with different backgrounds and parent specialities are very welcome and their interests would be accommodated. We currently have two Consultant Respiratory Physicians and an Emergency Medicine Consultant working with us.
Main duties of the job
APPLICATIONS FROM THOSE WHO WISH TO WORK LESS THAN FULL TIME, COVERING ONLY THE CRITICAL CARE COMPONENT OF THE JOB (4.5 PROGRAMMED ACTIVITY PLUS 1 SPA) WILL BE CONSIDERED.
The post holder will be an employee of Barts Health and there may be future opportunities or requirements to work at one of the other hospitals in the Barts Health group
From October 2019 a new rota has been introduced in which critical care is delivered in two dedicated weeks and a separate weekend over a 10 week cycle.

Job responsibilities
The focus of the job plan is on intensive care and high dependency care with regular sessions in anaesthesia or another parent specialty.
The contract will be for 10-programmed activities (PAs) as described in the 2003 consultant contract. These activities will be split between direct clinical care (DCC) and supporting professional activities (SPA). The successful candidate will start with a provisional job plan prior to agreeing a final job plan, including personal and professional developmental objectives with the Clinical Lead/Clinical Director within 3 months of commencement. The SPA allocation will be 2 per week (8 hours) as there may be a requirement to revalidate in two specialities. This allocation could increase as the post holder develops roles within the departments and becomes more involved in audit, teaching, management and governance activities.
For ITU or HDU the day starts at 0800 with a formal handover at 0830. Consultants are job planned from 0800-1800 for ITU/HDU.
A typical theatre day is also ten hours but from 0730-1730 hours for the standard theatres and 0800-1800 for the emergency theatre.
