Job summary

We have just completed a £6.8m project, funded by Barts Charity to renovate women's and maternity services to vastly improve the experience of our expectant mothers and their families. This includes a bespoke new birthing centre with 8 delivery rooms 5 with birthing pools. The delivery suite has been completely refurbished with all birthing room having on- suite facilities. In addition to this we are working closely with our redevelopment colleagues on the case for a new Whipps Cross Hospital, which will proudly host a state-of-the-art Maternity Unit.

We are currently looking to recruit an experienced midwife who is looking for a new and exciting opportunity as a Maternal Medicine midwife. This is a new role, and the successful candidate will be support by the cross-site lead midwife for maternal medicine. You will work closely with the Maternal Medicine team as a specialist midwife to facilitate high quality, effective, holistic, and supportive pregnancy care for women with pre-existing complex medical conditions or co-morbidities. This includes assessment of care needs, the development, implementation, and evaluation of programmes of care and the setting of standards.

Ongoing training will be provided to the successful candidate and also support by the senior midwifery team.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work as a specialist midwife to facilitate high quality, effective, holistic and supportive pregnancy care for women with pre-existing complex medical conditions or co-morbidities. This includes assessment of care needs, the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care and the setting of standards.

They will:

  • demonstrate effective leadership and management skills and promote a proactive approach to Maternal Medicine care within Maternity Services by identifying and implementing training needs
  • Be available as an expert in Maternal Medicine care for less experienced midwives and doctors, to ensure care provided within the Trust is effective and evidence-based to support safe practice
  • Act as a professional resource for other healthcare professionals within secondary and primary care. The post holder will be expected to assist in the design and delivery of educational programmes and study days appropriate to this speciality area
  • Work closely with the Maternal Medicine multi-disciplinary team to deliver the best care to women and their families in line with evidence-based guidelines
  • Report directly to, and develop close working relationships with, their Maternity Matron on operational, general management and clinical issues relevant to their practice area/team.
