APPOINTMENT AS TRUST DOCTOR/ST3 IN HAEMATOLOGY

Royal London Hospital, Barts Health NHS Trust: Full-time; 1:9 on call from home

Barts Health NHS Trust invites applicants for an ST3 equivalent/Trust doctor post in Haematology, based at the Royal London Hospital. This post is to cover a short term gap in the NE London Haematology training rotation. This post is planned to commence September 2022 and is for 3 months in the first instance but may be extended depending on satisfactory performance and other future movements in the NTN training program

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work under the clinical direction of all the consultants in the Haematology Department with clearly identified clinical and educational supervisors. The post would be ideal for those wishing to pursue a career in Haematology and to apply for a National Training Number. As such the post is suitable for experienced SHO equivalents/Clinical Fellows/Registrars who wish to pursue a career in Haematology and who would like to consolidate their experience.

The Royal London Hospital has a busy and interesting non-malignant clinical practice and one of the largest Haematology and Blood Transfusion laboratories in the country. The most recent GMC survey highlighted our department as one of the best training sites in London. The Clinical Haematology department has several active research programmes and has the largest NIHR research portfolio for non-malignant haematology research in the UK. The Royal London hospital is a tertiary centre for adult haemoglobinopathy, paediatric haematology, an adult and paediatric haemophilia centre and the host of the ITP registry.

Job responsibilities

At various times, the post holder will have clinical responsibility for patients admitted to the wards, ambulatory patients seen on the day unit and those seen in outpatients. Support to become proficient in bone marrow biopsy will be provided. On-call services are shared with SpRs from Whipps Cross Hospital and Newham University Hospital offering on call experience of tertiary non-malignant haematology, in particular supporting the regional Haemophilia and Haemoglobinopathy centres. The post holder will be expected to prioritise and time-manage effectively according to the activity of the department and to utilise appropriately the available senior staff for advice. The department has a key awareness of the importance of clinical audit, and all specialist trainees are encouraged to complete audit projects whilst here. Participation in undergraduate and CMT teaching is also encouraged

This post does not have educational approval from the postgraduate dean and will not be recognised for training, however support will be provided for career development, in-house SpR training sessions are currently running and attendance at Regional training days is strongly supported.

Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent
  • MRCP Part 1 or MRCPCH Part 1 A and B
  • Full MRCP (UK)

Desirable

  • Higher degree MSc, PhD, MD
  • Intercalated BSc or equivalent

Experience

Essential

  • Demonstrates awareness of the basics of managing patients with haematological disease
  • Competence at core-completion level in the management of medical emergencies, in-patients and outpatients
  • Evidence that present achievement and performance is commensurate with totality of training.
  • Evidence of experience in a range of acute medical specialties, with experience of managing patients on unselected medical take, during core training or equivalent.

Desirable

  • Evidence of skills in the management of acute medical emergencies (eg ALERT, IMPACT certification)
  • Evidence of skills in the management of patients not requiring hospital admission
  • Evidence of ST3-level procedural skills relevant to medical patients (clinical independence in central venous cannulation, chest drain insertion, joint aspiration, DC cardioversion, abdominal paracentesis.)
  • Experience at CT/ST 1/2-level of managing patients with haematological disease and managing haematological emergencies by the time of commencement of ST3 training.
