Job description
Job responsibilities
The post-holder will be expected to participate fully in the clinical work of the department, providing high standards of care for both in-patients and outpatients. The usual working hours are 0800 to 1700 hours. This job does not offer an on-call banding but for those with experience an opportunity to join the surgical SHO shift could be negotiated. Out of hours patients are seen initially by the general surgical SHO on-call and referred to the middle grade urological cover who is on-call from home from Royal London Hospital. Patients staying in Newham University Hospital overnight are handed over by the surgical SHO at 0800 hours.
The responsibility of the hand-over, ward round, in-patient care and clerking of the emergency patients with the support of the on-call registrar and the help of the foundation year trainee, will be the prime job. Safe hand-over (virtual or face to face) of the patients admitted over night or staying over the weekend will be the post-holders responsibility. This will be shared with the foundation year trainee.
The specialty doctor will be expected to help in outpatient activity - although no assigned clinic will be given but after completion of the inpatient activity the SHO will need to part-take in the clinical activity. This job will provide ample opportunity to assisting and learning to perform flexible cystoscopies, difficult catheterization, peno-scrotal emergency surgery and day case surgery.
Involvement in the running of the weekly MDT is expected and this job offers learning opportunities as the surgical dept holds weekly teaching sessions and the hospital has weekly teaching sessions for the FY2 doctors.
In addition, the post holders will be expected to play a full part in clinical governance activity. Currently there is a monthly Trust-wide Urology Governance meeting and there are bi-annual joint audit meetings with the hospitals in the North and East London Deanery.
There will also be administrative duties for the post holder as well as a supervisory responsibility for the junior members of the team.
