Job summary
Applications are invited to join a leading vascular ultrasound unit based in these two world famous London teaching hospitals. The temporary post for 15 months will suit Society for Vascular Technology accredited vascular scientists who are keen to expand their horizons and encompass the delivery of diagnostic excellence to the principal clinical stakeholders, undertake vascular research and teaching. Those approaching accreditation would be considered on a lower pay band.
Currently we have six accredited vascular scientists, one trainee vascular scientist and an administrator. The unit performs a wide range of vascular and microvascular diagnostic methods and is fully equipped with GE Logiq E10s and brand new Philips Epiq and Samsung RS85 machines. We work closely with six consultant vascular surgeons, two vascular nurse specialists and other medical specialists.
The Government has announced that the legal requirement for all NHS workers in England, to be double vaccinated,is currently under legislative review.
We do however encourage those in roles that have face to face contact with patients to be double vaccinated against COVID-19 (unless they are medically exempt), and are continuing to support the vaccination uptake for all staff as this remains the best line of defence.
Main duties of the job
To provide clinical diagnostic vascular ultrasound expertise to the Vascular Ultrasound Service and thereby deliver a comprehensive Trust wide vascular diagnostic ultrasound service to referring medical and surgical consultants.

Duplex Ultrasound
- Carotid artery assessment for stenosis, occlusion, dissection, aneurysm, carotid body tumour
- Peripheral venous assessment for superficial and deep venous thrombosis and incompetence, chronic thrombosis, post-thrombotic states, congenital venous malformation syndromes
- Peripheral arterial assessment - including the aorto-iliac segment for true and false aneurysm, occlusion, stenosis, dissection, embolic events, graft surveillance
- AV fistula assessment for mature haemodialysis fistulae and assessment of upper limb arterial and venous tree prior to AV fistula formation
- Pre-operative marking of veins for use as arterial bypass conduits and prior to varicose vein removal
Ultrasound Doppler pressure measurement
- Ankle-Brachial Pressure Index measurements
- To independently undertake the interpretation, diagnosis and reporting of a range of clinical conditions based on the complex data derived from vascular ultrasound investigations
- To recognise and report limitations of the scan which affect the accuracy of the diagnosis the post holder has derived from the scan, and recommend alternative imaging where appropriate
- To determine when urgent medical attention is required for the patient, based upon the diagnosis derived from the scan, and then obtain the appropriate medical attention
- To determine when it is appropriate to explain the findings of the scan to the patient: this requires a great deal of subjective judgement, sensitivity and empathy
- To inform the patient of what happens after the scan, in terms of further investigation and consultation regarding their medical complaint
- To attend angiography meetings to explain and discuss scan diagnoses with surgeons, radiologists and other medical professionals
- To provide, in collaboration with clinical colleagues, written protocols accurately describing all diagnostic procedures being utilised
- To study, assess and implement into clinical practice new specialist vascular ultrasound procedures
- In collaboration with clinical colleagues ensure that all matters relating to the proper clinical governance of the vascular ultrasound service are maintained
Patient Care
- To maintain confidentiality and patient dignity at all times
- To provide support and assistance to elderly and infirm patients: this may involve dealing with bodily fluids (vomit, urine, blood) and open wounds
- To assist patients with undressing and dressing, transferring on and off the bed, or to the toilet when necessary
Managerial
- To manage the vascular ultrasound clinic on a daily basis.
- Ensure that patients undergo their examinations promptly and prioritise investigations as necessary
- Ensure the facilities and environment of the clinic is maintained at a high standard
- Analyse the services management procedures and propose improvements to colleagues, implement change within the service
- To help ensure smooth implementation of new services offered by the vascular laboratory
Teaching, training
- Specifically to take responsibility for the training of;
- Trainee radiologists, clinical vascular scientists and ultrasonographers in the use of duplex scanning in vascular investigations
- Clinical Physics trainees in accordance with the professions requirements
- Other clinical and technical staff members seconded to the service in the use of Doppler ultrasound applied to carotid scanning
- Supervise and manage trainees undergoing clinical training
Research.
- To undertake the research and development of;
- diagnostic vascular ultrasound measurements
- clinical studies of vascular disease and publish results of evidence based medicine and scientific results in high quality clinical journals, oral presentations to large audiences and produce posters:
- Undertake the clinical audit of the service in collaboration with colleagues
- Undertake the clinical and technical support of clinical trials
