We are recruiting to the post of Clinical Fellow (FY2-ST1-2 Equivalent Grade) in Solid tumour oncology to commence as soon as possible.
The post will run for 6 months from 3rd August 2022, with scope for extension.
This post is based in the recently re-built state-of-the-art facilities at the Barts Cancer Centre at St. Bartholomew's Hospital in the City of London, rated overall as 'Good' in a 2017 CQC inspection, with some 'Outstanding' areas.
The centre is a major tertiary referral centre for all forms of malignant disease in adults, providing cancer services to a population of more than one and a half million people in East London and the City. We specialise in the delivery of inpatient and outpatient chemotherapy, immunotherapy and high-dose therapies, and run a large clinical trials service.
The post would be suitable for experienced doctors who have completed Foundation and Core Medical competencies (or equivalent), and wish to gain a period of focussed experience and training in a medical specialty in which they are interested in pursuing ST3 training. They would be suitable for candidates who are attempting the second parts of the MRCP (see section 3 below). Less experienced candidates will certainly be considered and are encouraged to apply.

There are currently 14 'ST1-2' level posts which provide cover for oncology patients organised into 2 teams of 7 (divided between solid tumour oncology and haemato-oncology). The post will be available for 6 months in the first instance.
The post will be based in the Department of Medical and Clinical Oncology
In the first instance, the posts are for a fixed term, commencing 3rd August 2022 Depending on performance it may be possible to extend the contract.
The posts would be suitable for junior doctors who wish to gain a period of focussed experience and training in an intensive medical specialty. They would be suitable for candidates who are attempting the second parts of the MRCP (see section 3 below). However less experienced candidates will also be considered.
Each post-holder will join the relevant Specialty firm
Duties will include:
- Daily review of in-patients usually with the SpR and/or Consultant
- Ward duties including practical procedures and MDT meetings
- Support for the FY1s
- Review of patients new admissions
- Outpatient experience in oncology clinics.
- Experience of relevant sub-specialty procedures
- Review of patients attending the day units
The post is part of a full shift rota - with 14 doctors participating in the night cover (as part of the Hospital at Night Team).

2. AUDIT/ CLINICAL EFFECTIVENESS Barts and The London NHS Trust has a clinical effectiveness department which is actively co-ordinating developments in this field. There will be opportunities for the post-holders to take part in departmental audits relevant to the speciality.
3. EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES AND STUDY LEAVE There are numerous educational opportunities at the St Bartholomews Hospital which the post-holder will be encouraged to attend. These include MDT meetings and a programme of weekly local educational meetings for junior doctors in oncology.
In addition, there is a very comprehensive PACES teaching programme in the early evenings for 4 to 5 weeks prior to each sitting of the examination. A mock PACES exam is also run 3 times a year. Feedback from previous trainees is excellent, the majority of whom go on to be successful in the subsequent examination.
There is a well-resourced library at St Bartholomews Hospital.
4. RESEARCH
Extensive research facilities exist at Barts Health NHS Trust and research is actively encouraged within the department and in conjunction with other departments of the hospital and college where there is an unusually wide range of research activity. Previous junior doctors have been able to undertake publications and audits within the department.
