12 Month clinical fellowship (ST3+ level) in Inherited Cardiovascular Disease

Barts Heart Centre is home to the merged cardiac units, which were recently based at The London Chest Hospital, St. Bartholomew's Hospital and The Heart Hospital. It is the heart attack centre for the region and provides interventional cardiology services, specialist cardiac imaging, electrophysiology services including device implants and ablation therapy for arrhythmia, grown up congenital heart disease, heart muscle disease and heart failure services. This post will provide exposure to a wide variety of Inherited and Acquired Cardiomyopathies and advanced specialist training.

This post provides training in inherited cardiac conditions (ICC) for a senior (ST3+ level or post-CCT) cardiology fellow and is ideal for cardiology fellows at the end or shortly after the completion of their training who would like an out-of-programme training opportunity in Cardiomyopathies.

Main duties of the job

Clinical Training and Responsibilities:

Clinic:

  • Cardiomyopathies: new and follow-up patients
  • Specialist clinic evaluating and investigating families with sudden arrhythmic death.

Inpatients

Routine care of patients admitted under the care of the ICC team and evaluation of those referred for an opinion from the ICC team.

Exercise Physiology

Training in conduct and interpretation of cardiopulmonary exercise testing

Imaging

Training in advanced echocardiography and/or cardiac magnetic resonance imaging.

Genetics

  1. Training in basic clinical genetics / genetic counselling
  2. Conducting family screening.
  3. Instruction in basic laboratory techniques (DNA extraction / PCR / sequencing)

Non-clinical training and responsibilities:

Research

  1. Work with clinical and research staff on existing projects
  2. Develop own research project in inherited cardiac disease

Teaching

  • To participate in teaching of medical students.

Governance

  • To participate in audit and clinical governance at Barts Heart. This may include responsibility for managing multidisciplinary meetings and/or a programme of clinical audit.

These posts therefore provide exposure to a wide variety of cardiology and medical conditions.

This post provides out-of-programme training in inherited cardiac conditions (ICC) for a candidate with suitable experience in clinical Cardiology. We expect post holders to undertake the same educational obligations as their colleagues.

Hours of work

You are expected to organise your working day and cooperate with your colleagues to allow 30 minutes natural break for each 4 hour period of work whenever feasible

There will be numerous educational opportunities at the Barts Heart Centre including weekly Cardiology teaching and departmental meetings. There will be monthly educational days which include morbidity and mortality meetings, educational sessions, audit, and research presentations.
