The Radiology department in Newham University Hospital is a busy, modern and well equipped department with fully digital general X-ray rooms (DR), a Fluoroscopy screening room, six general ultrasound rooms, a state-of-the-art 128 slice dual source CT scanner (a second CT scanner being installed now), a new state-of-the-art wide-bore 1.5 T MRI scanner, a digital mammography unit equipped with biopsy module, and maternity ultrasound units. We are also managing some extra-mobile units and satellite x-ray hub at Shrewsbury road.

We are a completely paperless department with a cross-trust HIS, PACS, RIS and VR system for reporting.

Main duties of the job

This is a fixed term recruitment process for a year to cover vacancies and provide cover for our Specialty Doctors team.The successful candidate(s) must have GMC registration. This is a new grade and T&Cs are as per the most recent version of the Medical & Dental Terms and Conditions of Service Specialist (England) April 2021 (https://www.nhsemployers.org/sites/default/files/media/TCS-for-speciality-doctors-england-2021_0.pdf)

The successful applicants are expected to report independently on plain X-rays, perform/report various fluoroscopy exams, ultrasound and CT scans. They are also expected to be perfectly capable of accurately reporting acute/emergency CT scans during the day and out of hours during the on-call/night shifts. The successful candidate(s) will be able to vet and report on MR scans under consultant supervision. They are expected to contribute to audits and discrepancy meetings and all other clinical governance exercises taking place in the radiology department or across the Imaging Network Group. They will be also required to attend and participate in the multidisciplinary meetings (MDM). They should be willing to teach the undergraduate medical students, radiology specialty registrars (SpRs), student radiographers and ultrasonographers. A developed subspecialty in radiology is desirable and will be encouraged.

Essential

  • Medical qualification from a recognized University or Medical School & GMC registered or registerable soon.

Desirable

  • FRCR or equivalent degree in Radiology

Experience

Essential

  • At least 3 years experience working in a radiology department
  • Experience of the UK National Health Service
  • Must have basic interventional radiology skills, e.g. Drain insertions, pleural tapping, percutaneous biopsies

  • Carotid ultrasound experience
