A short description of the role
We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated Clinical Research Fellow (ST3 level or above) to join our regenerative medicine research team here at Barts Heart Centre. The post-holder will work within our clinical service which treats heart failure patients with cell therapy on compassionate grounds - the only service of its kind in the UK. They will also support other areas of research within our department, including our refractory angina programme (the candidate will have the opportunity to complete an MD/PhD in this area if they so wish).

The research fellow will help run the Compassionate Cardiac Cell Therapy Unit. Duties will involve: patient recruitment and treatment (bone marrow aspiration, intracoronary cell infusions) and follow ups. There will also be opportunities to collate and publish research data.
The research fellow will also responsible for REGENERATE-COBRA. This Phase II clinical trial of autologous cell therapy for the treatment of refractory angina is the first trial in the UK to evaluate this therapy.

Clinical Duties:
In addition, the successful applicant may be asked to undertake a limited amount of the following activities:
- To provide, as part of the rota for interventional and structural cardiac services, day-to-day care for inpatients for these services. This includes patients admitted as part of the heart attack service, patients after emergency PCI for myocardial infarction or other acute coronary syndromes and patients undergoing elective procedures or assessment. It also includes being the Registrar on call for the heart attack service, through which all acute suspected and confirmed ST elevation myocardial infarction cases are admitted. All these duties are fully supported and supervised by the relevant Consultant body.
- To support the cardiac catheterisation laboratories for diagnostic coronary angiography and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). This includes supervising and performing some angiography and/or PCI (after appropriate training and competency assessment), reporting and reviewing studies on patients, maintaining patient safety at all times and assisting in the smooth running of these departments.
- To undertake regular outpatient activities in general cardiology and in clinics related to the investigation or treatment of coronary artery disease
- There is a full shift resident on call for the above inpatient services at Barts Heart Centre and the Heart Attack Service. This rota includes out of hours work and weekend work. The rota is compliant with the European Working Time Directive.
