Job summary

Trust Grade Level 1 post will be part of large T&O department. The post holder will be 1st on call with frequency of 1:14, including day, night and weekend on call and twilight shifts. The post holder will also work in wards, theatres and clinics.

The Trauma and Orthopaedic Service is currently based at Russells Hall Hospital (RHH) and Corbett Outpatient Centre (CH) which are the primary referral centres for Dudley patients requiring trauma and orthopaedic care. The department (including this post) consists of 11 full time substantive consultants, two part time consultants providing the Paediatric Orthopaedic Service, nine permanent middle grades, two deanery registrars.

There are currently 2 all day elective inpatient theatre lists Monday-Friday, 9 weekday day case lists and an all-day trauma list every day including weekends and public holidays

There are currently 30 outpatient sessions across the 2 sites including fracture clinics plus combined clinics with Rheumatology. Elective clinics currently run Monday to Friday, but the Unit is looking to extend out-patient provision to weekends and evenings

Main duties of the job

  • Normal Working day consists of covering the Trauma & Orthopaedic unit from 0800 until 1700.
  • Working collaboratively with colleagues to further develop and improve the service
  • Undertake duties on the ward, in outpatient clinics and operating theatres.
  • Requesting patient investigations with decision support
  • Assist the Consultant and Registrar in Theatre and undertaking minor surgical procedures under the supervision of either the Consultant or Registrar.
  • Participation in Trauma & Orthopaedics on-call rota. 1 in 14 on call Rota.
  • The duties consist of being on call on a one-in-fourteen basis on weekdays long day on call 8.00am - 2030 pm and split week of nights every 14th week with perspective cover. The weekend is also 1:14 long day oncall (0800-2030) and 1:14 ward cover for 4 hrs (0800-1200). Twilight shifts also 1:14 on weekdays (1600-1200) and weekends (1400-1200).
  • The oncalls / twilight Rota has prospective cover included and therefore it is expected that doctors will cover each other, in respect of annual, study leave and bank holidays, without additional pay.
