Job summary

The 10+2 PA contract consists of 11 Direct Clinical Care and one professional development (SPA). The post holder will be expected to show evidence of effective use of the SPA to develop him/herself or service in the department. The post holder will provide twenty-four-hour middle grade cover which includes weekend and night working. The rota will be EWTD compliant.

Negotiations to job plan are available, as part of the job plan process, after successful settling in period. The Trust is also able to offer a Certificate of Sponsorship for candidates who require a Tier 2 Visa. An overseas as well as NHS experience will be recognised in the entry point to the Specialty Doctor pay scale on an individual basis. The post holder will participate in the teaching and training of medical staff within the department as well as the undergraduate teaching of medical students, elective students & undergraduates.

There is a weekly middle grade teaching programme. Study, and other, leave entitlement is as found in Trust policies. The Speciality Doctors are expected to attend Trust mandatory training, have annual appraisals and updated development plans.

Main duties of the job

? Actively assess and manage patients attending the ED across the range of common emergency medicine presentations, including the resuscitation & assessment of seriously ill and injured patients, including paediatrics.

? To provide senior review of cases presented by doctors in training.

? To be competent running the emergency department in the Emergency Physician in Charge (EPIC) role out of hours with distant supervision.

? Provide onward referral of patients needing admission.

? To seek appropriate advice from consultants and inpatient specialities as required.

? Assist in maintaining flow of patients through the department and support the national 4-hour safety standard and Quality Indicators

? Consultant presence is daily from 08:00 - 24:00 (16 Hours) with off-site support out of hours.

? Support from ED Consultants with CESR experience in Emergency Medicine to gain this qualification if applicable.

? Supervision & Mentorship from Consultant body qualified as RCEM examiners, ARCPs panellists & National Run Through Training Interviewers.

Essential

  • Medical qualification recognised by the General Medical Council (GMC)
  • Full GMC registration with licence to practice
  • Life Support Courses (ALS, ATLS or ETC, APLS or EPALS)
  • Good communication, interpersonal and organisational skills. Ability to prioritise workload & use initiative Ability to know own limitations & when to seek advice. Meet the requirements of the GMC's Good Medical Practice.

Desirable

  • Computer/IT Research skills Level 1 Emergency Ultrasound accreditation or equivalent
  • Evidence of involvement in audit & research projects Experience at Registrar level or equivalent in the UK health system. Teaching on formal education programme for junior doctors. Delivering simulation training

Knowledge, Training and Experience

Essential

  • Completion of at least 4 years full time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis) with at least 2 years in Emergency Medicine. Experience in postgraduate and undergraduate teaching. Knowledge of current trends in Emergency Medicine. Up to date with CPD
  • Full registration and a Licence to Practice with the GMC MBBS/MBChB or equivalent
