Job summary
To undertake the Anaesthesia Associate (AA) Postgraduate Diploma with the University of Birmingham. This is a 27 month full time course, with 24 months of study and clinical training followed by three months of supervised clinical practice.
The programme is open to applicants from two different routes:
1. Registered health care practitioners (e.g., nurses, operating department practitioners) require one or both of the following:
At least three years' full-time, post-qualification work experience in a relevant area.
A first degree in a health-related subject
2.New entrants to health care (graduates or graduate equivalent) require:
A biomedical science or biological science background
Preferably a second-class Honours degree or better, or other evidence of recent and successful academic activity
A demonstrable commitment to a career in health care
Main duties of the job
1. The programme is made up of 12 two-month blocks of teaching. Each block lasts for approximately 35 days to allow for holidays and is broken down as follows:
Directed self-study - 70 hours
Small group teaching - 14 hours
Clinical skills teaching - 21 hours
Workplace experience - 140 hours
A typical week may consist of:
1 2-hour tutorial
2-3 days in the clinical area
1/2 day clinical skills training
1 1/2 days self-directed study, e.g. working through the e-lectures
2.The trainee will learn how to conduct a pre-operative assessment on the day of surgery including a visit to the patient on the ward, taking a full medical and anaesthetic history and examination of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems and a detailed airway assessment
3.The trainee will also be taught to perform practical procedures to include the insertion of peripheral venous cannulae and the insertion and verification of correct placement of airway devices including laryngeal masks, Guedel and nasal airways and endotracheal tubes using a laryngoscope
4.The trainee shall learn to administer medications, within the confines of the local patient specific directive, including the direct administration of anaesthetic induction and maintenance drugs, paralyzing agents, opiate and other analgesics.
