The Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust is seeking to appoint a Consultant Breast Surgeon to be based at the Darent Valley Hospital and Queen Marys Hospital Sidcup.
We offer you the opportunity to join a lively and enthusiastic Breast Surgical team in modern, well-equipped departments. This is a replacement 10PA Consultant Oncoplastic breast Surgeon post to replace the current Locum post (following retirement last year) and to support expansion, increasing elective activity and service development.
This vacancy is available immediately and is open to both existing Consultants and those trainees within 6 months of the Certificate of Complete of Training date.
The post holder will be expected to be an integral part of the Breast Unit and MDT, see both new and follow up patients in the outpatient setting and be committed to providing a Breast Surgery service with sub-specialisation in oncoplastic and reconstructive surgery.
There will be NO general surgical oncall commitment.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be able to fully participate in the training programme directed by the Director of Medical Education, which will include formal teaching sessions, directed and self-directed personal learning, structured appraisals and assessments.
The new appointee will be expected to assist in the development and provision of the core breast surgery services at Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust, contributing to the activity of the department and taking on other roles and responsibilities as required. There is a continuous responsibility for teaching, training and supervision of junior medical staff. An interest in the teaching of undergraduates, nurses and allied health professionals is desirable with activity to support audit and research activities encouraged. The Trust is committed to supporting Continuing Medical Education as part of revalidation with appropriate mentoring provided dependent on the particular needs of the appointee.
About us
The post holder will join an existing team of 18 Surgeons (General, Colorectal, Breast) supported by Associate Specialists, Speciality Doctors and Specialist Registrars in the Surgical Directorate.
This post is based at 2 sites - Empress Breast Unit at Darent Valley Hospital and Breast Unit @ Queen Mary's Hospital in Sidcup. The service across both sites is currently undergoing evaluation internally with a view to restructuring the work plans and improving patient pathways and enabling the trust to achieve 2WW targets and meet national standards.
This an expansion / replacement post and the incumbent will slot into a fully functioning job plan with direct clinical care sessions consisting of outpatient clinic and in-patient / day case theatre sessions. This activity will be supported by administrative sessions including a role as Educational Supervisor to Core or Higher Surgical Trainees and will form part of a job plan initially consisting of 10 PAs. The Consultant will have a team consisting of shared middle-grade specialty doctors and trainees.
