Job summary
The post holder will work as a member of the nursing team under the supervision and guidance of a Registered Dental Nurse in the Maxillofacial & Oral Surgery department.
They will undertake delegated personal care duties for patients / clients and will provide support for Nursing staff in maintaining a stable and safe clinical environment.
They will assist in the running of the outpatient clinics and /or a designated clinic, working with indirect supervision from a Registered Dental Nurse for advice or support.

Clinical responsibilities:
- Assist in the direct care of patients under the supervision of a Registered Dental Nurse.
- Assist in the running of Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery clinics and /or organising a designated clinic working with indirect supervision from a Registered Dental Nurse
- Courteously receive patients, relatives and visitors onto the ward / clinic area.
- Assist in the preparation of patients and equipment for clinical procedures.
- Act as an advocate for patients, protecting their rights, privacy and dignity.
- Independently provide a high standard of care to patients under the supervision and guidance of a Registered Dental Nurse.
- Once assessed as competent: independently do patient observations like blood pressure measurements, checking of pulse, oxygen saturation and blood glucose measurements.
- Report any change in a patients condition to the supervising nurse or nurse in charge.
- Assist in maintaining a safe environment for patients, visitors and other staff, as directed by the supervising nurse or nurse in charge.
- Act as a chaperone to patients/clients, and accompany them to other wards or departments maintaining their privacy, dignity and safety at all times.
- Undertake Basic Life Support when required (after training and assessed as competent)
- Maintain patient confidentiality at all times, only providing patient information under the guidance and supervision of a Registered Dental Nurse.
- Assist with maintaining the cleanliness of the ward / hospital environment, thus contributing the control of infection.
- Undertake other duties as directed, such as cleaning, storing and checking of equipment and maintaining storage areas in an orderly manner.
- Report incidents, accidents and near misses to the nurse in charge and using the Datix system.
- Demonstrate own duties to new starters.
- Contribute and participate as a positive, constructive member of the team
- Undertake care duties as a Health Care Assistant in other OPD departments; as might occasionally be required due to service demands to ensure effective and safe patient care.
