Job summary

Applications are invited for the permanent role of Senior Biomedical Scientist/Training Lead (Band 7), in Haematology. This post is predominantly based at Darent Valley Hospital and occasionally at Medway Maritime Hospital, Gillingham as the service requires.

The successful applicant must be State Registered with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC)Have and MSc or equivalent and have experience of working in an NHS pathology laboratory (or equivalent)

We are looking for an experienced Biomedical Scientist who can bring a dynamic and enthusiastic approach together with proven knowledge and skills in Haematology and Haemostasis .

The successful candidate will be responsible for the day to day organisation of the Haematology laboratory, ensuring that quality of results and expected turnaround times are maintained. As well as participation in managerial and laboratory meetings, the post-holder will be required to support the training and supervision of Biomedical Scientists and support staff in the laboratory

In partnership with Beckman Coulter UK (BCUK) our newly designed and refurbished pathology laboratory houses a range of equipment including: Beckman Coulter DxH 800 Analysers and SMS, IL(Werfen) TOP 700 and TOP 550 coagulation analysers and Bio-Rad Variant II for Haemoglobinopathy screening

Main duties of the job

Performs a range of advanced healthcare science clinical activities and provides highly specialised advice within own Department. Leads a team of Healthcare Scientists and Healthcare Science Support Workers for own work area and provide training. Holds additional responsibility as a Quality Officer or Operational Lead for Department. Travel between either sites as required with a primary base of Darent Valley Hospital

  1. Technical responsibilities:

Prioritising samples for processing and results for issuing.

Providing advice about the appropriate use of laboratory tests to users.

Performing tests and assays on all samples as necessary, according to established protocols and required standards.

Have extensive technical knowledge of the running of a haematology department.

Entering test results onto the laboratory computer system.

Delivering accurate results of samples within agreed turnaround times.

Checking the validity of samples and the need for repeat or further testing.

Authorising the release of results as required.

Authorising results which the Consultant Haematologist deems do not require clinical authorisation.

Discussing significantly abnormal results with the Consultant Haematologist and other clinicians.

Maintaining good housekeeping and analyser trouble shooting.

Adhering to Trust and departmental policies, guidelines and quality standards.

Working at all times according to departmental Standard Operating Procedures.

Has extensive IT knowledge of the LIMS and analytical middleware used in the department

2. Managerial Responsibilites

Managing the routine work of the haematology laboratory.

Compiling daily and weekly operational rosters ensuring staffing levels meet predicted activity within the assigned budget provision.

Maintaining staff service records, including schedules of work, staff absence, annual leave and weekly / monthly timesheets.

Developing and maintaining effective methods of staff communication and involvement.

Participating in the recruitment and selection of staff.

Maintaining staff files.

Co-ordinating the performance and development of the team, including undertaking personal development reviews and ensuring that all staff have a current personal development plan.

Monitoring staff performance in terms of productivity, quality and behaviours and to take appropriate actions to rectify any failings.

Acting on any problems and / or complaints that may arise in relation to the service provision.

Assisting the senior team with the provision of data and other written information relating to the service.

Supporting the development and maintenance of good working relationships with internal customers and external agencies by representing the Department on working groups or user groups.

Liaising with service users, laboratory personnel and other Trust personnel.

Participating in audits

Maintaining records, for example, quality audit reports and performance reports.

Assisting with the maintenance of ISO 15189 : 2012 accreditation

Assisting in the maintenance of departmental procedures, policies and documentation.

Maintaining test turnaround times by ensuring samples are dealt with in a timely manner.

Ensuring the Department adheres to quality control standards.

Participating in the National External Quality Assurance Scheme, returning results by the date for submission.

Participating in the review of quality control and quality assurance results.

Ensuring that procedures for maintaining equipment are followed.

Maintaining adequate stocks and ensuring efficient use of reagents and consumables.

Ordering reagents or supplies.

Discussing new tests and equipment with company representatives to develop the service and obtain best prices.

Contributing to the development of service improvement.

Recommending changes to techniques, consumables and equipment.

Seeking advice from the Lead BMS and Head of Blood Science when attempting to resolve complex problems.

Ensuring that the department is kept clean, tidy and safe at all times.

Ensuring clinical waste is not allowed to accumulate in the department.

Notifying the Lead BMS and Head of Blood Science about safety issues within the Department.

Undertaking appropriate tasks, new techniques or other developmental activities as required by the Lead BMS and Head of Blood Science
