We have a fantastic opportunity for an energetic and dynamic Speech and Language Therapist who is dysphagia trained, to become part of the experienced and friendly Speech and Language Therapy team that provides care to adult patients at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital Winchester. Speech and Language Therapy has a high profile within the acute hospital and multidisciplinary teams, and it is seen as an essential part of the collaborative working approach to provide a quality and timely service to patients.

Within the skill mix of staff providing acute and community care, we have a range of clinical leads and specialists who foster and support a varied learning environment. This post would be providing care at the acute stage of the patient pathway, across general medical, critical care and elderly care wards. There is daily access to senior therapists for support and regular scheduled supervision.

The Speech and Language Therapy team run both Video fluoroscopy and Fibreoptic Endoscopic Examination of Swallowing (FEES ) services which you will have an opportunity to gain experience in.

We work very closely with our inpatient colleagues at the North Hampshire Hospital Basingstoke and our community colleagues to provide a seamless service for our patients. Opportunities to work within these areas can be explored.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide a specialist inpatient Speech & Language Therapy Service to adults with acquired communication and eating, drinking and swallowing (EDS) disorders covering all hospital wards including critical care.
  • To work as an autonomous practitioner, in partnership with patients, carers and other healthcare professionals in order to deliver integrated specialised packages of care to adults with acquired communication and EDS difficulties.
  • There will be close team working with the Basingstoke North Hampshire Hospital acute team BNH and the community team and cross-site working may be required at times for equity of service and seamless transfer of care.

  • To supervise and train Speech and Language Therapy students, other healthcare professionals and staff from other agencies, who work with adults with acquired communication and EDS difficulties.
  • To provide general support and mentorship to less experienced Speech and Language Therapy colleagues working within the adult service.

  • Recognised Speech & Language Therapy degree level qualification or equivalent
  • Registered member of the Health Care Professions Council
  • Registered Member of the Royal College of Speech & Language Therapists

Desirable

  • Evidence of attendance of relevant specialist short courses and maintenance of CPD within the field of adult acquired communication/swallowing disorders

Experience & Knowledge

Essential

  • Ability to assess and manage classical cases of swallowing disorder with minimal support
  • Experience of working with a range of adult speech and language therapy-related disorders

Desirable

  • Experience of clinical supervision of students and others
  • Experience of delivering training to others
