Job summary

We invite candidates to apply for the position of Clinical Fellow in Critical Care. This post is for a six-month contract (with potential to extend) commencing in August, and is based at Basingstoke & North Hampshire Hospital (BNHH).

This is an excellent opportunity to learn and develop ultrasound skills with consultants providing FICE (focused intensive care echo) and lung ultrasound training. There are also opportunities to gain experience with delivering education and training.

The Critical Care department has a GE Venue ultrasound/echocardiography machine as well as 2 x GE Venue Go machines.The successful applicant can expect to have dedicated paid 'ultrasound training/practice' days as part of their job contract.

Main duties of the job

Main duties:

  • To learn, develop, and then apply ultrasound skills relevant to practice in critical care.
  • To contribute to and accurately document ICU ward rounds
  • Daily assessment of ICU/HDU patients assigned to his / her care
  • Organisation of investigations and prescription of therapy
  • Performance of procedures (including arterial lines, central venous catheters & chest drains and therapeutic interventions - all under supervision until deemed competent in a specific area)
  • Liaison with admitting teams and ICU support services
  • Attending cardiac arrest, emergency & trauma calls
  • Assessment of critical care referrals from theatres, emergency department or general wards

About us

The hospital has 18 critical care beds with 1050 admission per year. The units routinely manage complex surgical patients, as the hospital is a tertiary referral centre for Peritoneal Malignancy surgery.

The post holder will work a rota that includes evenings, weekends and nights on-call covering the Critical Care Unit. Night time work will be supported by an anaesthetically trained doctor on-site, as well as dedicated Consultant support from home. The working pattern is compliant with the European Working Time Directive. Total direct clinical care [DCC] hours averaged over 6 weeks will not exceed 48 hours a week.

Essential

  • MB ChB or equivalent
  • Licence to practice & full registration with GMC
  • Life support course successfully completed (e.g. ALS / ILS / PALS / ATLS)

Desirable

  • Previous training in intensive care medicine and/or anaesthetic
  • Postgraduate exam success (e.g. MRCP, FRCA, FFICM)
  • Life support course instructor

Experience and Knowledge

Essential

  • Significant experience of clinical work since medical qualification (including Foundation years)
  • Able to lead teams in a resuscitation environment

Desirable

  • Worked in UK's NHS
  • Demonstratable experience of clinical work in one of Anaesthetics / Emergency Medicine/ Acute medicine / Surgery / ICU
  • Independent practice of rapid sequence induction
  • Experience with bronchoscopy

Skills and Ability

  • Punctual & reliable
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to establish good professional relations with others
  • Physically & mentally fit with satisfactory occupational health clearance
