Job summary

This post is for a 10 PA Consultant Physician in Rheumatology comprising 8.5 DCC and 1.5 SPA sessions per week. The appointee will provide a specialist rheumatological service in conjunction with eight other Rheumatology Consultants based across both the Winchester and Basingstoke sites.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will provide support for our outpatient service but will also be involved with inpatient care, which is an integral part of the whole rheumatology service. This post will provide support for our Rheumatology outpatient service but also help us to achieve our 5 year goal of excellent care in Rheumatology including our biologics, CTD and fracture liaison services. Setting up an Ankylosing Spondylitis service, Rheumatology transition to adulthood and Fracture Liaison services are particular areas in development at the present time.

We are a dynamic team of 7.2 WTE consultants, with three colleagues with dual accreditation in Rheumatology and GIM. We are supported by 10 enthusiastic nurse practitioners, 5 band 7 (three independent prescribers) and 5 band 6s. Our Specialist Nurses run outpatient clinics, a Patient Advice Line service, provide joint injection clinics and support the role of the medical team. The medical team also has the valuable support of a Clinical Assistant, 2 Specialist Registrars, 1 GPVTS trainee and 1 FY2 doctor.

We are part of a friendly and strong Wessex Rheumatology network with regular CTD and US meetings. The department has got 5 Musculoskeletal Ultrasound machines, which are available for use in clinic and there is the option of developing further skills in this area if you are interested in doing so.

We have an active research team consisting of a Study Co-ordinator, Lead Research Consultant, Clinical Administrative Assistant and a part-time research nurse who work across both sites, facilitating enrolment in both NIHR Portfolio studies and commercial clinical trials.

There is dedicated administrative support for the whole rheumatology team.

Essential

  • Experienced in Clinical Audit and Clinical Governance and the benefits of how this improves the quality of care provided to patients
  • Wide experience in all aspects of Rheumatology

Desirable

  • Participation in local and national audit
  • Management training and experience
  • To provide a range of services to compliment the current skill mix of the department.

Professional Qualification

Essential

  • MRCP or equivalent
  • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register, or within 6 months of completion of CCT at time of interview
  • GMC registration

Desirable

  • Attended appropriate training courses
  • MD or equivalent Higher Degree or evidence of relevant research

Research & Teaching skills:

Essential

  • Evidence of participation in research
  • Continuing to commit to medical education
  • Experience of Teaching (Medical Students, peers, MDT)
