Job summary

Health Play Specialist 18 hours per week required to join our Play Team and be part of working with our paediatric surgical day team to provide a seamless service

Must have Professional UK registrations to apply - . FdA Healthcare Play Specialism, Edexcel Cert or Btec in Hospital Play specialism, or HPSC / HPSEB

Main duties of the job

The post holder will play an integral part in caring for children and young people within the Child Health, Emergency department and other areas across the 2 hospital sites (Basingstoke and Winchester). You will also work as a member of the multi-professional team using theoretical knowledge and evidence based practice to assess, plan, implement and evaluate the therapeutic play interventions, contributing to the promotion and maintenance of a child friendly environment.

As our organisation continues to develop we are currently in an exciting position to extend our service due to the increased restoration work. The trust has had to increase the number of Paediatric day case surgical theatre work . We are running extra surgical paediatric day case theatre lists across the 2 sites to ensure we meet our waiting list target.

Job description

Job responsibilities

To undertake therapeutic assessments and devise play programs for children and young people in hospital, according to their individual needs and as part of the overall care plan.

To be responsible for ensuring the safe use of play equipment and to contribute to the maintenance of a safe and tidy environment where children and young people have access to play facilities identifying and reporting areas of risk.

To plan and implement individual therapeutic play programs to include preparation for invasive and non-invasive procedures, distraction therapy and post-procedural play.

To monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions using reflective practice to achieve best outcomes.

To provide support to families to facilitate play for the children and their siblings.

To provide play based observations to influence and support the overall assessment of the child

To take on individual referrals for children experiencing difficulty in managing hospital admission/procedures, using evidence based practice to assess, plan, implement and evaluate therapeutic interventions.

To maintain a professional portfolio in line with HPSET recommendations for re-registration, recording learning outcomes from participation in internal and external development opportunities.
