Job summary
We are looking for an individual to join our friendly team in the Microbiology Laboratory at the Basingstoke site of North HampshireNHS Foundation Trust.
The role will beto support clinicians and scientists in the provision ofhigh quality results for our patients form the hospital and also those from surrounding GP surgeries.
This position is based in the Infection Sciences Department and is part of the team supporting the scientific and medical staff to achieve high quality patient results. The role involves carrying out the general administrative and support duties required to enable the analysis of a variety of patient samples.
This is a part-time position with working hours across Monday to Friday.
Main duties of the job
- Answering telephone enquiries to the department
- Ensuring samples delivered to the microbiology department are delivered to the appropriate bench in a timely fashion
- Welcoming and directing visitors/calls/emails to the department where appropriate
- Acceptance of deliveries to the department ensuring they are stored in the correct temperature for the product
- Ensure daily temperature log spreadsheet is completed in collaboration with wider team.
- Daily checking and scanning of paperwork to internal system
- Ensure used lab coats are bagged correctly and taken to yard for laundering.
- Participate in the sorting and prioritising of patient samples from specimen reception area and distribution to benches.
- Booking in patient mycology, sputum and blood culture samples when required.
- Ordering of stationary materials and other consumables
- Working as part of a supervised team and escalating appropriately to a supervisor when needed.
Support the OPAT Clinic Admin
- To liaise with OPAT team and patients to coordinate appointments
- Book outpatient clinic appointments and document patient outcomes on the inhouse system (EPR/Patient Centre)
- Print and send outcome and appointment letters
About us
The microbiology laboratory provides a diagnostic infection service to the trust and surrounding general practices in North Hampshire. The laboratory is committed to providing accurate, efficient and effective results and advice to our users and to this end the support staff in the laboratory are a critical part of our processes.
The team is lead by our clinical team including Consultant microbiologists and Clinical Scientist. The work is largely comprised of the processing of patient samples to determine carriage or infection with micro-organisms (bacteria, viruses and fungi). The handling and processing of these samples is managed by our team of medical laboratory assistants and the interpretation of the work is performed by our Biomedical Scientists.
From before the recent pandemic and during this difficult time the laboratory has striven to maintain an excellent team ethic and aims to create a diverse, welcoming and encouraging environment.
