Job summary

Applications are invited for the post of Anatomical Pathology Technologist for the Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Mortuary Service. We are looking for a technician with proven technical skills to join our enthusiastic team in maintaining and developing service quality. Applicants must have excellent communication skills, display meticulous attention to detail and have a detailed knowledge of Mortuary function and end-of-life care.

Main duties of the job

Applicants should be aware of HTA licensing requirements. The successful candidate will have extensive experience of working with community partners, The Coroners Office and Bereavement services, with an innate empathic approach towards the bereaved and a supportive attitude to colleagues in an emotionally and physically demanding workplace.

The role will include participating in the 24/7 on-call service and as a dual site mortuary service, while the successful candidate will be based routinely at the Basingstoke site, there will be a rotational requirement to work cross- site. We strongly encourage potential applicants to evaluate the practical elements of being available to respond to calls and be on site out-of-hours 1 week in 3 before applying

Permanent position: 37.5 hours + on call

Please note that minimum qualification level for consideration of a qualified post will be the Diploma Level 3 or equivalent. Please note that this is not a trainee post so we are not in a position to consider unqualified applicants, however if you are part of the current final year cohort of the Diploma 3 and expect to qualify in 2022, please make contact in advance of submitting an application to discuss.

About us

Our service is comprised of two HTA-licensed mortuary sites, with Basingstoke & North Hampshire Hospital Mortuary currently providing hospital and Coronial services, and The Royal Hampshire County Hospital Mortuary providing hospital, Coronial and a forensic mortuary services. In total, around 1000 Coronial Post Mortems are carried out annually over both sites.

The HHFT Mortuary Service supports professional development and encourages qualified APTs with the right skills and background to look positively at more senior roles and the diploma routes to technical and management advancement where it meets service succession planning need.

Job responsibilities

To assist the Mortuary Manager and Site Leads in the provision and development of a comprehensive service within Hampshire Hospital NHS Foundation Trust mortuaries: Royal Hampshire County Hospital at Winchester and Basingstoke & North Hampshire Hospital as required. To assist in conducting post-mortem examinations, removing internal organs, taking and recording samples for laboratory analysis and weighing major organs ensuring confidentiality and dignity of the deceased are maintained at all times To assist with receiving / releasing of deceased patients, identification / viewings of deceased patients and participate in the out of hours service.
