The Paediatric team at HHFT are looking for a Locum Consultant to support acute general paediatrics. We are looking for an applicant who has an interest in & experience in paediatric epilepsy. This 7 PA post is for 1 year initially, following the retirement of one of our colleagues on the Basingstoke site.
Whilst we are ideally looking for a post holder with expertise in paediatric Epilepsy other sub speciality interests will be considered. Our Epilepsy service has the benefit of having a specialist epilepsy children's community nurse as well as involvement from the wider multi-professional team. HHFT works closely with our tertiary hospitals with opportunity for close working.
Main duties of the job
Outpatient clinical work will include specialist epilepsy clinics as well as some general paediatric clinics.
The post holder will provide support and contribute to the provision of emergency general paediatric and neonatal care. They will work with a team of colleagues to lead in the day to day running of the child health department and provide continuity of care. There will be an opportunity to develop roles in management and clinical governance and the post holder will be supported to develop roles and gain experience in line with their area of interest. The job plan can be flexible to a degree depending on the skills of the post holder.
On calls at resident and consultant level will involve covering the general paediatric ward and admissions, level 2 neonatal unit, labour ward and transitional care. The post will also include a small number of resident night shifts. The involvement of consultants in the middle grade rota helps to reduce admissions and increases quality of care, while providing some security from the national shortage of trainees and middle grade paediatricians.

Our Paediatric teams are responsible for: -
Inpatient wards: - G2 in Basingstoke has 28 inpatient beds and Northbrook ward in Winchester has 18 inpatient beds for children aged 0-18 years These provide inpatient care for a range of specialties including medical, surgical, ENT and orthopaedic admissions.
Paediatric Assessment Units (PAU), BNHH - Charlie's Day Unit, RHCH - Sophie's Place:
The assessment units are adjacent to the main paediatric wards. Local GPs have immediate access to an expert Paediatric opinion on any child requiring urgent assessment. Children referred for a paediatric opinion from Accident & Emergency are also seen in the PAU.
Outpatients:
There is a dedicated paediatric outpatient area adjacent to each paediatric ward with over 8000 attendances each year. There are daily general paediatric clinics, special interest clinics plus visiting specialist clinics in cardiology, neurology, nephrology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, orthopaedics, cystic fibrosis, and surgery.
Neonatal Care:
Level 2 neonatal intensive care is provided as part of the South Central Neonatal Network.
The Department has close links for tertiary services with the University Hospital Southampton and joint clinics with colleagues are held in the following specialties, surgery, cardiology, neurology, endocrinology, nephrology, gastroenterology and rheumatology.
