Job summary
This 24 month apprenticeship role offers the opportunity to earn as you learn. Successful candidates will be enrolled on a level 3 integrated Pharmacy apprenticeship with a day release to attend college. Apprentices take on a hybrid learning format of underpinning knowledge of Pharmacy and sciences as well as the on the job skills of a pharmacy technician, assessed by assignments and evidence collection to an e-portfolio in order to register with the General Pharmaceutical council as a Pharmacy Technician by the end of the course.
Apprentices will spend their time split between our Basingstoke and Winchester sites rotating through the different areas of the pharmacy department, including :

Main duties of the job

Job responsibilities
- To work through the level 3 Pharmacy Technician apprenticeships programme and complete all assignments and educational tasks to deadlines to satisfy the requirements for qualification and registration as a Pharmacy Technician.
- To gain practical experience in the tasks required of pharmacy technicians in various sections of the Pharmacy department under supervision of a registered Pharmacy Technician or Pharmacist.
- To co-operate with all pharmacy staff in providing and developing an efficient and comprehensive pharmaceutical service for all patients of Hampshire Hospitals Foundation Trust and other organisations with whom we hold a Service Level Agreement.
- To follow all pharmacy policies and standard operating procedures (SOPs) and, if suitable, suggest changes or modifications that might be applicable to improve the pharmaceutical service offered.
- To assist in the safe and economic usage, supply, and distribution of drugs, using guidance laid down by legislation and within the hospital formulary to help the Trust meet its core objectives. To ensure the security of drugs on the wards and within the pharmacy department.
- To be aware of the Medicines Act, Health and Safety at Work Act and COSHH and ensure that you comply with all Trust and departmental health and safety policies. To maintain safe systems of work and safe workplaces.
- To actively participate in Risk Management within the department and Trust.
- To use various software systems to access patient details, record patient details, issue stock and patient specific medication.
- To carry out general housekeeping duties across the department, returning used items, with a view to cost savings and keeping the environment clean and tidy.
- To assist in the receipt of goods, checking delivery notes and invoices, issuing of stock and participation in the ward top up service and, procurement of medicines for the Pharmacy department
- To use Good manufacturing practice and aseptic techniques, within isolators, to undertake the compounding of cytotoxic medicines for adults and children, following laid down procedures, to ensure that patients receive a safe and quality product.
- Maintain a high level of accuracy in all work carried out to ensure patient safety.
- To be able to follow procedures, current legislation and regulations governing the Health and Safety at Work Act and COSHH.
- Receive and issue prescriptions in the outpatient dispensary from members of the public and provide counselling on their medications.
- Occasional lifting of IV fluids and other bulky and heavy medicines (up to 15kg).
- To carry out such alternative duties as appropriate to the grade as may be required from time to time to ensure a fully flexible work team.
- To participate in any 7-day shift pattern as required by the service, including weekend, Bank Holiday and late-night rotas.
