The role of Lead Radiographer of the Breast Centre and Wilshire Breast Screening Service, incorporates the management of NHS Breast Screening Programme (NHSBSP) and symptomatic breast service. The role is based at GWH Swindon and involves working on mobile screening units based at various sites throughout Wiltshire.

In collaboration with the Director of Breast Screening and Programme Manager, the post holder will be responsible for the operational management and strategic planning of the Wiltshire Breast Screening Service as a member of the service's senior leadership team and will combine clinical and management responsibilities.

The post holder must have in-depth knowledge of the national breast screening programme (NHSBSP). The role involves maintaining competency in all areas of clinical and professional breast radiography practice, including specialised breast assessment and symptomatic work, and advanced practice as applicable.

The post holder will lead and manage both the mammographic team and the radiographic aspects of the Breast screening service as well as the symptomatic breast imaging service run alongside the surgical teams.

In addition, the post holder will form part of the overall senior leadership team across Imaging and act as liaison between main Imaging and Breast Centre.

Main duties of the job

The lead radiographer's main responsibilities are to:

  • lead and manage both the mammographic team and the radiographic aspects of the service, so that all examinations are of the appropriate diagnostic quality and delivered in a caring and compassionate manner
  • make sure all staff work effectively within their scope of practice
  • make sure all quality control checks on equipment are properly undertaken and results recorded to maximise patient safety
  • maintain close links with the programme manager andSOMso that the service can meet demand and capacity requirements
  • undertake audits required bySQAS, such as technical recall/technical repeat audit
  • ensure a safe and efficient transition where there are changes to equipment or supplies, communicating clear timelines to staff and providing appropriate training
  • manage the maintenance of mammography equipment by ensuring:
    • that timely and appropriate replacement and procurement of equipment takes place
    • a biannual medical physics survey takes place
    • equipment is maintained according to the maintenance schedule for all equipment under their control

To ensure inter-professional leadership for the service and staff in order to deliver a quality service to patients.

To be the lead for clinical governance ensuring a safe and effective service for patients and staff.

1. Work with the Programme Manager and Imaging General Manager to manage the resources of the Breast Screening Service to ensure that screening targets are met whilst also maintaining the quality of the Symptomatic Mammography Service.2. In conjunction with senior colleagues, monitor service provision against waiting-time standards, including two-week-wait and other relevant turnaround times and activity levels.3. Monitor compliance/non-compliance to quality standards to provide information for forward planning and measure conformance with NHSBSP and Cancer Plan targets.4. Optimise efficient and effective deployment of the radiographic workforce and mammography equipment to enable all relevant service standards and turnaround times to be met.5. Prepare evidence for the Quality Assurance Team visits, demonstrating that the Breast Screening Unit meets quality assurance standards as laid down by NHSBSP. Work with and delegate appropriately to the departments QA radiographer in this regard.6. Maintain appropriate procedures for the validation, analysis, and submission of statistical and service monitoring returns for the Unit and the Trust.7. Continually develop and review business, workforce, and service plans to take account of the changing demands placed on the service. These may be because of changes to national guidelines, national policy or clinical practice but may also be driven by local demographics.8. Participate in the development of business cases to ensure that the service continues to meet the needs of the local population and conforms to national guidance.9. Manage the equipment procurement process for the service, ensuring a robust and transparent evaluation process which considers both clinical and financial criteria is in place.10. Ensure all facilities are in place to enable the mobile units to operate in various locations around Swindon and Wiltshire, developing a strategy to ensure maximum uptake of appointments in the various screening rounds.11. In association with the Clinical Director of the Breast Centre, co-ordinate the activities of the BreastCentre alongside the General Manager for Imaging and the Breast Commissioners, working with relevant external agencies as required.18. Lead the Breast Centre management team in the planning and organisation of selected complex activities such as service development and staffing plans.19. Ensure that the unit complies with NHSBSP regulations and that QA guidelines are adhered to.20. Line manage all radiographic staff, delegating selected people-management responsibilities appropriately to suitable team members.21. Provide professional leadership for all radiographers and associated clinical staff in the department.22. In conjunction with the Practice Educator, take responsibility for competency assessment and arranging training of radiographers and assistant practitioners.23. Oversee the implementation of, and adherence to all statutory regulations and legislation, including IR(ME)R regulations, the justification, authorisation, and optimisation of x-ray exposures, and exercise the applicable duties and responsibilities of the Employer, Operator, Practitioner, and medical Physics Expert in the context of the regulations. Work with and delegate appropriately to the departments radiation protection supervisor in this regard.25.
