Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated, enthusiastic Registered Nurse to apply for the role of Senior Staff Nurse, Dove ward at the Great Western Hospital in Swindon.

Dove Ward is a specialist haematology ward, delivering complex systemic anti-cancer therapy (SACT). The post holder needs to be competent in the skills required to manage this group of patients. The ward has accreditation to administer stem cells (JACIE accreditation).

Main duties of the job

The ward also provides supportive therapies so the post holder must be proficient in administering blood products and be familiar with implementing the Trust's guidelines on Blood Transfusion and dealing with adverse reactions.

Good communication, multi-disciplinary working, organisational and interpersonal/negotiation skills are essential for this post, including educating and empowering patients and their carers.

Line management responsibility of junior staff.

To be a competent practitioner with the ability to demonstrate clinical expertise and judgement under the Scope for Professional Practice.

Job description

Job responsibilities

To provide a high standard of patient care: plan, implement and evaluate care on an individual basis holistically.

To communicate effectively with patients and families, providing relevant support, information, education to patients and their carers how to deal with complications caused by SACT e.g. neutropenic sepsis.

To be competent to administer SACT and manage the SACT triage line.

To be skilled in treatment of anaphylaxis and to recognise and initiate treatment for neutropenic sepsis.

To care for patients who are at end of life whilst working closely with the palliative care team.

To care for patients who are undergoing a stem cell transplant.

To be competent in accessing and maintaining the patency of central lines; to educate patients and relatives.

Recognizing when physiological interventions are needed, to act accordingly and refer to other members of the MDT as needed.

Manage patients receiving blood and blood product support including reactions as per Trust Policy.

To have a theoretical knowledge of patients diagnoses, to be able to further support the patient and their family/carers.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered nurse Part 1
  • Experience at Band 5 or above
  • Diploma/Degree in relevant area or willing to work towards one
  • Teaching qualification e.g. ENB 998
  • ENB N59 (chemotherapy course) or equivalent (or willingness to undertake)
  • Post registration training preferably in haematological / oncological care.
  • Demonstrates evidence of ongoing continuous professional development
  • Leadership skills

Desirable

  • ENB 237 course or ENB N14 or equivalent (or willingness to undertake)
  • NVQ assessor
  • Mentor to pre-registration students
  • ALERT
  • Evidence of teaching skills

Experience

Essential

  • Regular experience of taking charge and delegating duties
  • Experience of working as a preceptor/facilitator
  • Demonstrates evidence of ability to educate others
  • Thorough and up to date knowledge of nursing theory and best practice particularly within haematological and oncological care and the application of this in practice
  • Significant experience at a Band 5 or above

Desirable

  • Evidence of involvement in service users advocacy and complaints resolution.
