Job summary

1 x permanent (37.5 hrs per week)

1 x Fixed Term for 12 months (37.5 hrs per week)

We are currently looking to appoint two enthusiastic and motivated Band 6 Radiographers to undertake Mammographic Breast Imaging for both Screening and Symptomatic services.

The role encompasses working both at the Breast Centre at The Great Western Hospital and on the service's two mobile units which travel around Wiltshire.

The post holder will be expected to carry out routine breast screening and the more specialist mammographic examinations required in screening assessment clinics and symptomatic breast clinics. The post is that of a senior grade and so duties will encompass some managerial and supervisory tasks.

Main duties of the job

1. To independently assess each patient. Perform specialist mammography at the speed and technical skill level demanded by the service, adapting radiographic techniques according to the needs of the patient.

2. To work at a band 6 senior Radiographer level, taking responsibility for the smooth running of clinics and workload management.

3. To provide an excellent standard of care to women attending for mammography.

4. Be sufficiently informed and professionally competent to identify and address patients' information needs with respect to breast awareness and other health issues.

5. To carry out discussion with the patient regarding clinical implications and outcomes. Deal appropriately with complex, sensitive or contentious information on a regular basis.

6. To assist the Radiologist with Ultrasound examinations and to take a lead role in patient care and clinical support during interventional procedures, including image guided biopsies in the assessment and symptomatic clinics.

7. To meet the psychological needs of anxious patients undergoing biopsies and carry out basic nursing procedures to dress puncture sites and give after-care advise.

8. To support patients and relatives who may be in a distressed or anxious state with sensitivity andempathy.

1 As a senior Radiographer take responsibility for a specific area of responsibility within the department. These will range from PACS to health and safety and will depend on the needs of the department.

2 To carry out and record routine quality control procedures, equipment tests, and be responsible for reporting any adverse occurrences to nominated QA radiographer or line manager.

3 To assist with the transfer and management of digital images.

4 To travel regularly to the mobile screening units when required (own transport and a driving licence are required).

5 Transport by data sticks, paperwork and other items to and from the mobile units daily, ensuring any patient identifiable data it is store adequately in accordance with PIAG section 60 and in relation to security.

6 Assist in relocation of mobile screening units.

7 To maintain stock levels within the department and on the mobiles and keep them clean and tidy.

8 To record clinical details accurately on all paperwork.

9 To input data accurately onto NBSS computer system and to assist with clerical duties as directed.

10 To adhere to documented procedures to ensure delivery of a quality service at all times.

11 To undertake and participate in departmental audit and to monitor, by self-audit, personal radiographic standards ensuring that they comply with NHSBSP standards. Receive any training necessary to maintain it.

12 To participate in Continual Professional Development, attend relevant study days and contribute towards multidisciplinary meetings.

13 To prepare and actively participate in Trusts annual Performance Development Review and ensure training and development needs detailed in your PDP are followed up and their effectiveness evaluated in terms of self, patients, and service.

14 To carry out all x-ray techniques with regard to legal requirements under Ionising Radiation Regulations.

15 To be aware of manual handling, health and safety and clinical governance issues and their consequences. To advise on and assist in the development of safe systems of work.

16 To be involved in developing and maintaining a Quality Management System and the collation and distribution of statistical data. Develop protocols and work instructions in accordance with the QMS.
