Apprentice Operating Department Practitioner

Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

The closing date is 02 October 2024

Job summary

If you are passionate about delivering high-quality care to patients and wish to progress your career with the perioperative care setting, our Operating Department Practitioner apprenticeship opportunity could be for you.

Operating Department Practitioners (ODP) work as part of the multidisciplinary team, providing high quality, safe and compassionate care to patients in operating Theatre environment and other care settings. The ODP apprenticeship offers you a rewarding and challenging role that combines study and on the job training whilst enabling you to earn and work towards a professional career and registration.

The apprenticeship is a three year programme during which you will study the theory and practical requirements to be awarded a BSc (Hons) in Operating Department Practice and support registration as an Operating Department Practitioner (ODP). You will be required to commit to both university led study and clinical placements.

The Apprentice Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) will work towards becoming a Registered ODP through successful completion of the BSc degree in Operating Department Practice, leading towards professional registration with the Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC) and employment as a registered ODP.

Main duties of the job

Throughout the programme, the Apprentice ODP will develop and maintain the knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviours of a Health Care Practitioner as well as developing clinical competencies in Operating Department Practice; this includes working with a range of patient groups, surgical specialities, multidisciplinary teams and disciplines within the perioperative environment.

The Apprentice training programme combines and integrates both academic and work-based learning through close collaboration between GWH and the chosen education provider(s). The Apprentice ODP will be employed by GWH but will work in a range of clinical placement settings in order that they gain experience of other health and care contexts that are relevant to their role and allow them to fulfil all the requirements of the programme.

The Apprentice ODP will be expected to work with the perioperative multidisciplinary team (including Anaesthetists and Surgeons) to provide effective care within scope of practice and in accordance with departmental need. The Apprentice ODP will be accountable for their own practice and take reasonable steps to sustain and improve professional competence and knowledge; this includes ensuring practice is in accordance with the HCPC code of professional conduct and other appropriate HCPC, trust and statutory guidelines.
