Job summary

Swindon Undergraduate Academy would like to appoint Clinical Teaching Fellows both office (OB-CTF) and ward based (WB-CTF) for the Academic Year beginning August 2024. These are 1-year posts in the first instance, but they can be extended for a further 12 months but will have to re-apply for their post in line with Trust policy.

These posts are aimed at post-foundation year doctors (F3-ST4) who wish to spend time working in a medical educational role at the Academy in Swindon, working with medical students from the Universities of Bristol (UoB), Oxford (UoO) & Kings College London (KCL). The posts are suitable for doctors who wish to take time out before starting higher medical training; doctors who want to take a year out of a training programme (subject to agreement by the relevant training programme director) or for doctors interested in an academic career who wish to pursue a higher degree such as an MSc or doctorate (MD).

All appointees will be fully funded to undertake a formal educational qualification such as the University of Bristol Teaching & Learning for Health Professionals (TLHP) certificate or equivalent.

Main duties of the job

  1. The CTF's work on a day-to-day basis with the Academy Undergraduate Manager and administrators, and the UC / UT's who are responsible for organizing the formal teaching programme and clinical placements for that Unit in their Academy. They will ensure that specified formal teaching sessions are appropriately timetabled and delivered.
  2. CTF's need to be in regular communication with the UT / UC and with each other. They meet formally throughout the year, to review the course and plan for the future. In order to achieve this each CTF will develop and use an individual or group CTF Outlook Calendar.
  3. An Office Based CTF is expected to work 40 hrs per week 09:00 - 17:00 of which one day will be spent in a clinical specialty, see allocation of clinical areas of responsibility below. It is recognized that the workload is variable and that the hours will need to be flexible. A Ward Based CTF appointed to ED/ITU (6 month rotation) will work one week clinical/one week Academy, and will be included on the departmental rota which will include some weekends.
  4. It must be recognized that students will be present in an Academy for only part of a calendar year. When considering the sessional commitment, periods of greater or less educational activity need to be averaged over the year.
