Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity for qualified Assistant Practitioner to work within our Scrub Team undertaking the role of Assistant Theatre Practitioner.

The Assistant Theatre Practitioner will work as part of the multidisciplinary team to assess, plan, implement and evaluate high quality, safe and compassionate care for patients in the perioperative setting, under the direction / supervision of a registered practitioner.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will utilise their training, skills and experience, relevant to their particular area of clinical practice, to undertake a range of tasks as defined within the policies and procedures relevant to the clinical area / scope of practice.

The post holder will support the Theatre Leadership Team to ensure standards of practice and care quality are upheld; this includes working to relevant policies, procedures and national standards, as well as acting as a role model, supporting the learning of others and contributing to the development and implementation of improvement ideas.

Our drive for continuous improvement is an integral part of our Trust ambition and we work collaboratively to improve the experience for our patients and our impact on the environment. We also are embarking on an Improving Together journey which will support clinical teams to make local quality improvements within the department.

We have 15 operating Theatres, 2 recovery areas, a Day Surgery Unit and a 23-hour, surgical short stay unit within our department. We are an inclusive team and work together with a shared goal of delivering high quality, evidence based, safe perioperative care. We have ambitious plans to develop our services to meet the needs of our patients, staff, as well as the expectations of our commissioners, regulators and other health partners.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  1. Assess, plan, and implement high quality, safe, compassionate, and effective perioperative care for patients, under the direction / supervision of a registered practice and in accordance with scope of practice as determined within Trust policies and procedures.
  2. Ensure risk management / safety strategies, Trust policies and departmental procedures are adhered to in the delivery of patient care.
  3. Demonstrate a sound theoretical understanding and practical application of evidence-based, perioperative care standards in line with national recommendations and clinical guidance (e.g., NICE, AfPP).
  4. Ensure patient safety strategies (e.g., WHO surgical Safety / 5 steps to safer surgery) are implemented consistently and where appropriate, contribute to the development of new initiatives which support the improvement agenda.
  5. Acts as the patient advocate during the perioperative journey; promotes dignity and respect as well as ensuring the patient is cared for in a way that meets their expectations and maximises patient experience by responding to physical, social and psychological needs.
  6. Be accountable for own practice and decisions taken, ensuring that only appropriate tasks within scope of practice are accepted or delegated.
  7. Work within the limits of competence and Trust policies / procedures, exercising professional duty of candour and raising concerns in situations that put patients or the public at risk.
  8. Understand and commit to legal and professional duty of care, ensuring clinical activities are undertaken within scope of practice and to the standards expected to avoid causing harm to patients through actions or omissions.
  9. Display a personal commitment to the standards and behaviours expected by professional and regulatory bodies to support trust and integrity with colleagues and service users.
  10. Work with the Perioperative multidisciplinary team to ensure perioperative care is delivered safely and effectively, as well as maximising efficiently to promote utilisation of theatre capacity.

  13. Contribute to a positive learning experience by undertaking teaching activities to support the development of staff and students within the perioperative setting; this includes promoting good practice and providing supervision to learners.
  14. Use experience to support the maintenance and improvement of perioperative standards.
  15. Accountable for maintaining standards of practice within the perioperative environment, promoting a professional, patient centred approach to care provision.
  16. Evaluate the effectiveness of care by supporting audits which inform future practice, Trust policies and departmental procedures.
  17. Responsible for reporting clinical incidents and adverse events to senior staff, as well as completing incident reports (DATIX) to support timely investigation and resolution.
  18. Maintain clinical practice by keeping up to date with local/national policies, developments, and initiatives relevant to professional area; utilising knowledge to inform current and future practice, this includes the completion and maintenance of relevant clinical / professional competencies.
  19. Undertake Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities commensurate to the role and scope of practice; maintain professional portfolio to support the assessment / achievement of CPD.
  20. Encourage and facilitate the generation and implementation of new initiatives within the clinical environment to support improvement for the benefit of patients, service users and colleagues.
