We are looking for Intensive Care Medicine Consultants to join us in our 560 bed modern district general hospital in beautiful North Wiltshire. Swindon is a rapidly growing town surrounded by glorious countryside. The Great Western Hospital benefits from easy access to the M4 and road connections north to the Cotswolds. There are excellent rail links as well.

There are ample opportunities to grow as a consultant including an in house, cross specialty quality improvement programme (Network and Navigate) and a clinical leadership course linked to Keele University (HELM) with time available to undertake these.

A specialty interest in Intensive Care is essential. For candidates with a second specialty interest, there is an opportunity to combine this. Our current consultants are all anaesthetists and they provide elective anaesthesia for a variety of DGH surgical specialties. We actively encourage the development of a specialist anaesthetic interest.

Main duties of the job

The Duties outlined below are not definitive and may be changed in accordance with the needs of the service.

Clinical Duties:

Multidisciplinary team working is key component of the working within the Trust and involves regular MDT discussions with colleagues
Providing evidence-based care for patients in a multidisciplinary setting.
Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in your charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care (with secretarial support)
Development of sub specialty interests that fit in with Division needs and the strategic direction of the Trust.
Responsibilities for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties are required, and for contributing to undergraduate and post-graduate and continuing medical education activity.
Provision of cover for Consultant colleagues' periods of leave in accordance with arrangements agreed within Trust policy.
Participation in clinical audit and in continuing medical education.
Conducting suitable duties in cases of emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.
The post holder will participate in an out of hours consultant rota, detailed within the job plan section.

This role is a replacement role within the department of Critical Care. The appointed candidate(s) will join an existing team of nine Consultants & SAS doctors. On joining the department, you will become part of a well-established, friendly team and will help us continue to drive forward improvements in the service that we provide to our patients. As a senior member of the team, you will become a key part in the delivery of training and supervision to our junior colleagues.

As a Trust, we place high importance on staff wellbeing, you will be offered a wide variety of support to help you maintain your wellbeing and to help colleagues maintain theirs. The Trusts Health and Wellbeing team has won a National Award during 2020 for the work they have done locally.

The Department of Critical Care houses 12 beds each in individual side-rooms. Ostensibly these are split as 8 level 3 (ICU) beds and 4 level 2 (HDU) beds, however, given pressures produced by the COVID pandemic, each has now been equipped to allow flexibility to accommodate either. In addition there are plans to increase the footprint of the department to accommodate an additional 4 level 2 beds. The unit is staffed by a multi-disciplinary team including a dedicated physiotherapy team, pharmacist, dietician and speech and language therapist, working alongside the consultants and 14 junior doctors. In addition there is a well-established Critical Care Outreach service, providing support to the wards on a 24/7 basis.

This is an exciting time in critical care, with an expansion in our services expected, and an opportunity to be involved in the transformational development of our service, including the introduction of a clinical information system to move to a paperless environment. There is a local ICS accredited echocardiography course (FICE now FUSIC) run on a regular basis, with mentors available.

An example job plan is included in the appendix. There is a consultant of the week running Monday to Thursday, before handing over to weekend consultant. A second consultant, or senior registrar, assists with work during the day (week days). Emergency work overnight currently requires on-site presence until midnight, and then to be available on-call. The frequency of overnight on-calls is 1:10.

A second specialty is encouraged, with many of the consultant body providing anaesthetic support in theatres. The two departments work together closely, with joint departmental meetings and clinical governance sessions on a monthly basis. If the second CCT is in anaesthetics, the candidate would join the anaesthetic department of 33 consultants, 11 SAS doctors and 18 trainees. They would provide anaesthetic services to a range of surgical specialties, in a theatre complex of 15 theatres. There is also a busy maternity unit, with an additional two theatres, and provision to deliver anaesthetics in the oral surgery department and radiology.The Department of Critical Care is located in the main hospital building, which is situated just off the M4 motorway. This provides excellent travel links (including good onsite parking), with many cities within easy range. The Trust is located in North Wiltshire, on the edge of Swindon and just north of Marlborough, with access to a variety of outstanding areas to live, which include both urban and village areas with short commutes to the site.
