Job summary

We require professional, flexible, motivated and committed team members capable of delivering high quality, patient-focussed care within a busy, progressive and varied department.

Working as a Floor Team Co-ordinator you will be required to function effectively as a member of the peri-operative team to ensure the provision of an efficient and high-quality surgical service. You will work autonomously, taking personal responsibility for your actions and decisions while evaluating the effectiveness of care given.

Main duties of the job

To facilitate the flow of perioperative patients. Creating and ensuring that the Team maintains a productive, clean, safe and friendly environment in which patients can await their surgery comfortably.

To liaise with the Wards, Theatres and Recovery in order to ensure patients are prepared for surgery and have the relevant documentation, improving theatre turnaround and increasing efficiency.

To be responsible for audit and to take an active role in appraisals, probationary reviews and return to work interviews, with support from the Clinical Lead. To work alongside the Theatre Co-ordinator and Clinical Leads to ensure that day-to-day efficiency targets are met.

To be an accountable and autonomous professional, acting in the best interests of your patients at all times and taking personal responsibility for your actions and decisions.

To be responsible for patient assessment, delivery and supervision of safe, compassionate care and evaluating the effectiveness of care.

About us

Our Theatre service boasts 15 operating Theatres, 2 recovery areas, a Day Surgery Unit and a 23 hours unit. There are exciting improvement plans due to begin with the introduction of a new IT system and a full Theatre transformation project in which all staff working within the Theatres department will be pivotal to its success.

General Theatres undertake a wide range of specialities in both the elective and emergency settings including Orthopaedic, Trauma, ENT, Breast, General Surgery and Urology.

GWH is conveniently located just a mile off the M4 (Junction 15), and there is a bus service from the town centre and the station (every 15 minutes). Swindon is the perfect base to explore the Cotswolds, Bristol, Bath and Reading. London is easily accessible by train, bus or car.

Job responsibilities

1. Co-ordinate patient flow throughout the theatre journey.

2. Allocate daily tasks, breaks and individual jobs to the Floor Team members.

3. Improve theatre efficiency and turnaround by ensuring that patients are ready for surgery, providing a safe and comfortable waiting area for pre-operative patients and facilitating timely return to the Wards for post-operative patients.

4. To act as a central point of contact between the Floor Team, Wards, Theatres and Recovery.

5. To undertake and record physiological observations including temperature, pulse, blood pressure and respiratory rate and escalate any concerns to a registered colleague in a timely manner.

6. To ensure the professional development, safe, caring, and compassionate practice of Floor Team members through peer support, supervision and teaching and identify any areas for improvement.

7. To work alongside the Clinical Lead in taking an active role in appraisals, probationary reviews and return to work interviews for the Floor Team employees.

8. Undertake and document a comprehensive assessment of the physical, psychological, social, and spiritual needs of your patients.

9. To understand your own limitations, accountability and responsibility when delegating to others.

10. Ensure awareness of safeguarding of adults and children, in adherence with Trust Policy and STAR Values.

11. Ensure that all local policies and national NICE guidelines are adhered to.

21. Ability to deal with distressed patients / clients on a regular basis.
