The Great Western Hospital is looking to appoint an enthusiastic Consultant Haematologist to join our team. This is a new 8 PA post at the Great Western Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Swindon.
The successful candidate will join the existing team of six consultants in providing clinical haematology services to Swindon and the surrounding area. This a general haematology post covering both malignant and non-malignant practice. We are particularly keen to attract candidates who will develop the lymphoma service and take part in our autologous transplant programme.
We provide a clinical and laboratory haematology service, managing a full range of haematological conditions to BCSH level 2b. There is a dedicated 10 bed haematology ward and haemato-oncology day care facilities. Our autologous transplant programme is JACIE accredited. Allogeneic transplants and CAR-T cellular therapies are managed in conjunction with Oxford University Hospitals.
The post holder should have a broad base of training in clinical and laboratory haematology and must hold full and specialist registration with a licence to practise with the General Medical Council. Additionally, they should be holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or be within six months of award of CCT or equivalent by the date of interview. The post holder should have the FRCPath or show evidence of equivalent qualification.
Main duties of the job
Clinical Duties:
- We work very much as part of a Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) and the post holder will be an integral part of this. Where appropriate, the post holder will also join our network of tertiary centre disease specific MDTs at Oxford University Hospitals. In addition, there is close liaison with the Haemostasis and Thrombosis Centre, immunohaematology, NHSBT and transplant centre in Oxford.
- Undertake ward rounds and outpatient clinics.
- Continued responsibility for the management of patients under their care.
- Develop a sub-specialty interest in malignant disease with a focus on lymphoma.
- Assist in the delivery of the autologous transplant programme.
- Participate in out-of-hours consultant cover on a rota (anticipated to be 1:6). On-call responsibilities will include cover for haematology day and inpatients as well as clinical and laboratory consults arising from outside of the department
- Actively participate in the day-to-day clinical supervision and management of the haematology laboratory
- Active participation in clinical research with recruitment of patients to clinical trials, taking the role of Principal Investigator where appropriate.
- Contribute to undergraduate, post-graduate and continuing medical education.
- Provide cover for Consultant colleagues' periods of leave in accordance with arrangements agreed within Trust policy

The hospital is a Teaching Hospital for undergraduate students from both Oxford and Bristol Universities. The department is supported by three specialty registrars (Severn Deanery), two specialty doctors, two ward based GPVTS posts, and an F2. There are also three Advanced Clinical Practitioners (ACPs) who each have a specialism (lymphoma, myeloma and transplant). The autologous stem cell programme is co-ordinated by the ACP in conjunction with JACIE Quality and Data Managers. Finally there are transfusion and anticoagulant practitioners who help deliver the transfusion and haemostasis/thrombosis services respectively. There is an ISO accredited automated combined blood sciences and transfusion laboratory with electronic tracking of blood components to ensure traceability.
Management and Leadership Responsibilities:
All Consultant Haematologist are accountable through the Clinical Lead for Haematology Services to the Associate Medical Director, who has overall responsibility for the services within the Division. Consultants are key members of the Divisional team and are accountable and responsible for leading changes to service that will improve the patient experience.
- To support the Clinical Lead in policy and strategy development as a senior member of the Divisional Management Team.
- To contribute to the leadership and development of clinical and laboratory haematology services under the direction of the Clinical Lead and Associate Medical Director and in line with the Trusts Business Plans.
- Work in partnership with colleagues in other Divisions within the Trust.
- As part of the Divisional Management Team, assist in the cost effective utilisation of resources.
- To work with the Head of Pathology Services/Laboratory Director, Blood Sciences Laboratory manager and the Pathology Quality manager to ensure that a safe, patient centred service is provided meeting local and national standards such as ISO15189:2012, MHRA BSQR and the ANNB screening programme. Participating in relevant EQA schemes that assure competent professional practice
Clinical Governance and Audit
All consultants are expected to participate in clinical effectiveness activities. They are expected to maintain and foster improvements in the quality and standards of clinical services. Consultants lead the safeguarding of high standards of care by participating in the creation of environment in which excellence in clinical care will flourish.
Consultants are expected to support the Clinical/Medical Leadership teams within their division to achieve the following:
- Production of a Division annual clinical governance plan.
- Production of a Division quality strategy.
- Production of a Division quarterly report to the Trusts Clinical Governance and Risk Committee.
- Ensuring targets within the plan are met, including:
- Adoption of evidence based practice including compliance with government guidance, e.g. NICE
- Establishment and implementation of a Division clinical audit programme
- Completion of risk assessments as required and compliance with the Trusts risk management policies and strategies including controls assurance standards
- Encouraging research and development
- Ensuring, through the Divisional Director, in association with the Division of Workforce and Education, that Division staff meet the education and training targets agreed within the Trusts annual plan.
- Ensuring through the Divisional Director that complaints management is timely and effective including implementing action plans relating to individual complaints.
- Contributing to work force planning to ensure timely availability of appropriate clinical skills to maintain excellence in patient care.
