The Neurodevelopmental Clinical Nurse Specialist is a Non-Medical Prescriber who will work within the Community Paediatric team to provide specialist support to children and young people with a diagnosis of ADHD and other neurodevelopmental disorders, and their families. They will hold a caseload and independently prescribe medications for ADHD and sleep, under agreed service protocols and in agreement with the child/young person's Community Paediatrician, and in accordance with local and NICE guidelines (NG87) and the principles of prescribing set out in the Competency Framework for all Prescribers (Royal Pharmaceutical Society 2016). They will contribute to the multidisciplinary triage of cases and take on a co-ordinating role including formalliaison with other services for children and young people, including mental health services.

Assessment1. Undertake clinical evaluation of children and young people referred to the service who have been diagnosed with ADHD. The clinical workload will be agreed with the clinical supervisor and line manager.The clinical work is specialised, and is based upon the appropriate use, interpretation and integration of complex data from a variety of sources, including schools, family members and others involved in the child or young persons care. The clinical assessment and management of risk related to medication is integral to the work.2. Undertake diagnostic assessments of children and young people referred to the service, including Qb testing.Planning3. Formulate treatment plans / therapeutic interventions with children, young people and their families including treatment with medication.4. Make clinical decisions within the context of assessment and work with families to identify appropriate treatment interventions that best meet the needs identified.

Clinical Intervention5. Be clinically autonomous for the long term management of children and young people with ADHD and their families.6. Offer a variety of complex treatment plans, for children and young people aged 6-18 years who have a diagnosis of ADHD.7. Where treatment with medication is appropriate, follow evidence based interventions in line with Trust, local and NICE guidelines.8. Provide behavioural advice as appropriate to families of children and young people with ADHD.9. Sleep assessment and pharmaceutical support where appropriate in children with neurodevelopmental conditions.10. Use a range of nursing and therapeutic interventions including direct work with the child/young person11. Contribute knowledge and skills in devising, developing and facilitating parenting programmes and group work for children and young people with ADHD and their families.12. Communicate effectively with the child, young person and their family and all others involved, through face to face clinic appointments and virtual reviews.13. Utilise highly developed communication, interpersonal and empathetic skills in engaging all members of the family in the assessment process. The information being provided may be highly complex or sensitive in nature and there will often be barriers to overcome regarding understanding. Act as an advocate when needs are not being met.14. Give expert advice to families outside appointments, managing an unpredictable caseload.15. Participate and work closely with families and staff who are participating in clinical drug trials (if applicable).

Review, Evaluation and Development16. Monitor the health of children prior to initiating and while on medication for ADHD, according to NICE guidelines, and make clinical decisions accordingly.17. Maintain relevant clinical and pharmacological knowledge, critically appraise and apply information in practice.18. Work to expand the role of the Neurodevelopmental Clinical Nurse Specialist in connection with new ways of working in Community Paediatrics.19. Participate in research, audit and survey related to nurse prescribing and in new ways of working within the Community Paediatric service.20. Contribute to the planning and implementation of outcome monitoring of clinical services, as required.

Teamwork21. Work closely with other nursing colleagues in the Community Paediatric team to ensure the service is covered.

Record Keeping22. Ensure appropriate medical records are maintained, ensuring compliance with Information Governance.23. Ensure appropriate risk and other assessments are completed and documented in a timely manner in accordance with Trust policy.24. Work collaboratively within the teams administrative support structures and adhere to requirements relating to the recording of statistical and clinical data on the clinic database.

Teaching/Training25. Provide specialist training to other professionals and other agencies as appropriate.

Recruitment26. To participate in the selection and recruitment of new staff as appropriate.

Multi Agency Working27. Facilitate the transition of care for young people with ADHD to adult services.28. Liaise with other agencies according to the needs of the child/young person29. Attend Complex Case meetings and other professional meetings as required.30. Work jointly with other professionals and parents to support children and young people with ADHD, offering a nursing perspective and maintaining a positive multi-agency culture.31.   • Applicant must be a registered nurse on the live NMC register
  • Or hold the specialist Community Public Health Nursing - Health Visitor qualification
  • Or hold the Specialist Community Public Health Nursing - School nurse qualification of the NMC register
  • Demonstrate the ability at this point in time, to undertake the V300 course in Non-Medical Prescribing at Degree (6) or Masters (7) level

Desirable

  • Post registration qualification in independent prescribing recordable with the NMC (V300) Post registration qualification in supplementary prescribing recordable with the NMC (V150)

Experience

Essential

  • Significant post registration experience including at a band 6 level or equivalent
