Job summary
Great Western Hospital NHS Foundation Trust are seeking a Band 6 Junior Sister/Charge Nurse to join our team over 4 areas: Dove / DTC / CWU and MDU.
We provide highly specialised care for adults who have both a cancer and non-cancer diagnoses and cover a wide range of both medical, haematological and oncology diseases. Staff in this friendly and supportive team develop a range of advanced clinical skills and knowledge by rotating between the 4 departments within the service.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will assist the Ward Managers/Senior Sisters in leading and managing a team of nurses across all 4 areas.
Working closely with the multi-disciplinary team, the post holder will demonstrate a high standard of individualised patient care.
The post holder will participate in the provision of care to patients, their families and carers working closely with the multi-disciplinary The post holder will demonstrate continuing professional development, reflecting individual needs, the needs of the team and the needs of the organisation.
The post holder will also have the specialist skills to administer cytotoxic chemotherapy and other specialist treatments e.g. Stem Cell Transplants. Training at first-degree level can be provided if needed.
The four units provide blood and supportive therapies so the post holder must be proficient in administering blood products.

- To assist the ward manager in the running of the ward, accepting responsibility for the management of the ward where indicated or in the absence of the ward manager. This may include effective management of issues arising from sickness and absence, return to work interviews and one to one interviews or appraisals
- To assess patient needs, implement and evaluate patient care, throughout admission and in planning effective discharge, ensuring a high standard of patient care through own actions and as a role model to the nursing team.
- To be responsible for the management of patients on the ward, ensuring nursing care is evidence based and conforms to trust guidelines, policies and procedures whilst promoting patient participation in care and assisting others to identify and meet the learning needs of patients and their relatives whilst in hospital.
- To work with the Ward Managers/Senior Sisters to monitor and critically analyse patient care, identifying areas for development improvement, through audit and patient feedback.
