Job summary

Part time - 22 hours per week

An opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, reliable and motivated Orthoptist to join our team of 4 Orthoptists and 5 Optometrists within a busy Ophthalmology department. Duties include paediatric and adult orthoptic clinics as well as an emphasis on developing specialist services such as those for patients who have had a stroke. Close working with the extended team of Consultants, Specialty and Junior Doctors, Nurses, Ophthalmic Technicians and Administrative staff will be integral to the role.

The successful candidate should have significant post graduate clinical experience. This should be across a broad range of clinical experience with infants, children, adult and older adult patients. They should also be comfortable with dealing with acute presentations of ocular motility issues and meaningful assessment of patients with communication or physical limitations.

We are an accredited placement for orthoptic students and we also have an orthoptic led school screening service.

As a trust we support CPD and will fund training to a masters level if this promotes improvements in our service.

Main duties of the job

  • As an autonomous practitioner, will be legally, professionally and solely responsible for comprehensive investigative, diagnostic and therapeutic Orthoptic procedures. This requires accuracy, acute observations and dexterity whilst working within established protocols.
  • Maintain up to date knowledge of techniques and technology and to maintain required levels professional clinical practise, competencies and skills. To maintain own standards of professional conduct and performance in line with HCPC, BIOS and Trust policies, competencies and guidelines
  • To be aware of and implement Trust and departmental policies and procedures, and participate in the development of departmental policies. To assess, and participate in, modifying dept guidelinesprotocols as necessary

  • Degree BSc (or equivalent diploma) in Orthoptics with evidence of significant post graduate training to masters level or working towards
  • HCPC registration
  • Membership of BIOS
  • Evidence of appropriate on-going professional development/CPD

  • Teaching certificate C&G 730 and/or BIOS clinical teaching mocule
