Job summary

This post has been designed with funds secured from HEE to support the development of the podiatry workforce within the South West, specifically supporting the development of a Podiatric Surgical Registrar.

This role is to work as a podiatric surgical registrar, as part of a podiatric surgical network in the south west of England, specifically within GWH, for Swindon, Wiltshire and Somerset. The post holder will be responsible for developing their skill set in elective foot surgery and its related structures as well as acute and chronic surgical management of the high risk foot and the delivery of Podiatric Surgery Services under the direction of the Consultant Podiatric Surgeons.

The successful candidate will work and develop their skills in podiatric surgery and the high-risk foot as part of a highly motivated specialised team, providing specialist advice, guidance intervention and care to patients, podiatrists, GP and other health care providers.

Main duties of the job

  • To develop and refine their surgical and clinical skills in podiatric surgery leading to confidence and competence of running independent surgical and clinic lists
  • To develop skill sets and knowledge base in Multi-disciplinary team management of the high risk foot, including vascular surgery, plastic surgery and endocrinology.
  • To support and work with the T&O orthopaedic foot and ankle team including clinical meetings, clinical governance, joint clinics and theatre lists.
  • To teach and develop specialist areas of Podiatric Surgical work, including acute diabetic foot disease, inflammatory arthropathies and the surgical intervention of these conditions, as well as other foot and ankle related pathology.
  • You may be required to participate with rotations within Vascular hub Cheltenham, Plastics and Bone Infection Unit Oxford (pending agreement)
  • Involvement and maybe required to lead research/Audit - including SOLARIO study, BKA RCA, Pascom10
  • You will be required to cover for DM Foot Co-ordinator/consultant podiatric surgeons
  • You will need to work with your other colleagues to ensure annual leave, study leave and sick leave are covered appropriately within the service
  • The podiatric surgical registrar is responsible for holding DM Foot co-ordinator bleep 0900-1700 Mon-Fri.

Job responsibilities

  • To conduct new patient assessment, follow-up, clinical clerking and any specialist clinics with, or on behalf of, the responsible Consultant Podiatric Surgeon, diagnosing problems and planning and providing treatment.
  • To lead theatre sessions and delegate specific sessional responsibilities.
  • To undertake or commission appropriate medical examinations and diagnostic investigations.
  • To communicate with the patients, their relatives, family doctors, consultants from other specialities and other health and social services colleagues.
  • Administer advanced local anaesthetic injections.
  • Manage surgical and general complications.
  • Issue drug treatment including analgesics, antibiotics, anti-inflammatories and anti-thrombotic drugs as per Patient Group Directions or through independent prescribing.
  • To support in providing day to day management and progress monitoring of out and in-patients, reporting responsibly to the Consultant Podiatric Surgeons or other members of the MDT, and within any guidelines laid down by the Trust.
  • To maintain accurate and comprehensive records for medical and administrative purposes.
  • To liaise with the administration team and staff regarding the administration of patients.
