Job summary

Applicants are invited to apply for a Clinical Fellow ST4+ post in Emergency Medicine and Palliative Care . Post is from August 2023 for a fixed term period of 12 months.

This new collaborative role between the emergency department and Palliative Care Team.

60% of the post will be Emergency Medicine clinical care allowing an opportunity for doctors wanting to gain experience and responsibility in not just managing patients but managing a busy department (at Registrar level).

40% of the time will be spent delivering clinical palliative care and palliative care education and training.

The Emergency Department and Urgent Treatment Centre sees approximately 130,000 attendances per year with a separate Paediatric Emergency Department.

The department has a 5-bay resuscitation area, a 13-bay majors trolly area, an ambulatory majors area, a minor theatre a plaster room and an 8 bedded observation area. The department is located adjacent to the Radiology and an Ambulatory Care Unit. There are plans and funding for redevelopment of the urgent care centre and creation of an integrated front door. Work has recently been completed on the newbuild Urgent Treatment Centre and is due to start on the new Emergency Department in early 2023.

Main duties of the job

60% of the post will be Emergency Medicine clinical care. This is geared at doctors wanting to gain experience and responsibility in not just managing patients but managing a busy department (at Registrar level). The post holder under the direction of senior colleagues will undertake the below duties, these are not definitive and may be changed in accordance with the needs of the service:

  • Take a history and examine a patient
  • Identify and synthesize problems
  • Prescribe safely
  • Keep an accurate and relevant medical record (electronic notes)
  • Manage time and clinical priorities effectively
  • Communicate effectively with patients, relatives and colleagues
  • Use evidence, guidelines and audit to benefit patient care

We are a busy DGH Emergency Department that sees a wide variety of presentations (in both adult and paediatric). We deal with medical, surgical, orthopaedic, paediatric and trauma patients. These patients can present and be assessed in resus, majors, minors or paediatric ED.
