Consultant Endocrinology and Diabetes

It is an exciting time for outstanding candidates to join our existing team of Consultants in Endocrinology and Diabetes at the Great Western Hospital, Swindon. We are looking for a dynamic team player to aid the transformation of our service across the local health community and ensure the service continues to improve the excellent care we provide for our patients.

This is a substantive and full time Consultant post offering clinical speciality work in Diabetes and Endocrinology outpatient clinics and includes General Internal Medical on calls.

Main duties of the job

This is a general Endocrinology & Diabetes Consultant post and the clinical workload involves Inpatient Diabetes, outpatient clinics including Insulin Pump clinics, Thyroid clinics, general diabetes and Endocrine clinics. There is GIM cover ward commitment

The service also provides an Inpatient Diabetes Pathway to review and treat patients for admission avoidance and LOS reduction, supported by the specialist nursing teams.

The job offers opportunity of leading the insulin pump service in addition to the on-going experience in general Diabetes including Young Adult/Adolescent Diabetes and Antenatal. Endocrinology clinics include thyroid, adrenal, joint pituitary, parathyroid patients, with monthly Multidisciplinary Meetings.

About us

The Great Western Hospital in Swindon is a large, busy, modern district general hospital situated on a green field site near junction 15 of the M4 between the Marlborough Downs, the Ridgeway and the Vale of the White Horse. The population served by the Diabetes and Endocrine Department extends between Oxfordshire, Wiltshire, Gloucestershire and Berkshire, a population of approximately 330,000.

The Trust provides full radiology facilities including CT and MRI scanners, interventional angiography and nuclear medicine, maternity services, an Intensive Care Unit, an Urgent Care Centre and a 24/7 Emergency Department

Our Diabetes Nursing staff work alongside the Swindon Community Diabetes Service providing support and education for patients, and our consultant staff work collaboratively with local GPs for education and development of services.

The Department sees the full range of Endocrinology & Diabetes conditions, plus offers specialist clinics in diabetic foot, young adult and transition, weight management, male hypogonadism and pituitary conditions. The Department is supported by a number of diabetic Specialist Nurses, Endocrine Specialist nurse, dieticians, clinical psychologist and podiatry service. full radiology facilities including CT, MRI and nuclear medicine scans. Vascular support is provided by a network arrangement with Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The Endocrinology and Diabetes service hold busy outpatient clinics from the Osprey unit on the third floor of the hospital, matching high outpatient demand and activity. We work collaboratively with Oxford centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism (OCDEM) as our Tertiary centre for referrals and opinions.

In addition to the practical clinical experience, the post holder will be encouraged to develop local research and audit. The department is currently participating in anti-thyroid drug research with British Endocrine Society.
