Speech & Language Therapist - Adult Learning Disabilities

Are you an experienced Speech and Language Therapist with a passion for working with adults with a learning disability?

We are looking for a motivated, compassionate, and enthusiastic individual to complement our specialist multi-disciplinary team (comprising of nurses, psychologists, assistant practitioners, health support workers, and occupational therapy) working with individuals with a range of complex needs, including mental health issues, complex physical health needs, and behaviours of concern.

We aim to provide quality specialist services that respect individual needs and promote independence, recovery, and social inclusion.

Applicants will ideally have completed their post-graduate dysphagia training. However, we also welcome applications from individuals are in the process of, or have an interest in, completing this. Successful completion of this qualification is an essential criterion for this role.

Main duties of the job

Our new SLT will be expected to work within a multi-disciplinary team in addressing a range of care and support issues within the community setting for adults with a learning disability. They will contribute to the prevention of unnecessary hospital admissions, more timely discharges, and the improvement of the health and wellbeing of the population served. The SLT will contribute to supporting service users to be involved and engaged in decision making about their own care and support needs.

They will assess and manage the complex dysphagia and communication needs of people referred to the Community Learning Disabilities Team, alongside other members of the MDT, and in accordance with NICE guidelines and national frameworks for learning disabilities.

The appointed SLT will also be expected to devise and provide training packages to staff both within and outside of the organisation.

Monthly management supervision is provided. Discipline specific clinical supervision will be provided externally to the team.
