We have an exciting opportunity for a registered mental health nurse, occupational therapist or social worker looking to progress their career as a clinical specialty practitioner, specialising in dual diagnosis. Our Mental Health Liaison in Ipswich Hospital is looking for a skilled and experienced person to join the passionate and dedicated team. This role is vital for those who are experiencing difficulties with their mental health alongside drug and/or alcohol use, to identify their needs and ensure these are met effectively whilst in hospital, and to contribute towards timely/supportive discharge planning. This will include developing and maintaining relationships across key partnership agencies, such as Turning Point and the Drug and Alcohol Recovery Outreach Service (DAROS). A flexible 'can do' attitude, with a willingness to build links with the hospital colleagues is essential to ensure that a proactive interface is created between the relevant services. The service operates 24/7, 365 days of the year. This is a full time post Monday to Friday, no unsocial hours. across 5 days.
Main duties of the job
Assessment of mental state and cognitive impairment of patients in assessment departments within the hospital, or admitted to a ward
- Independently assessing of mental health needs on departure from Ipswich Hospital, to lead on patients with dual diagnosis
- Assessment of risk, with expertise in dual diagnosis
- Offer specialist knowledge, skills and experience in this area.
- Support with complex discharge planning
- Improving response to and management of referrals
- Improving knowledge and understanding of mental health issues within the hospital and proactively exploring and developing partnerships and pathways to improve patient prognosis and outcomes
- Supervision of colleagues
- Advanced clinical practise and specialist clinical skills, providing expertise
- To support the leadership of the service, influence, lead and motivate staff in the team
- To support the team and the wider hospitals training and education development needs
- To engage in Trust leadership forums
- Contribute to positive interfacing with staff across Trust and external services
About us
The MHLT work across two organisations, Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust (NSFT) and East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust (ESNEFT). In the Emergency Department, the MHLT work closely with emergency medicine and other clinicians to assess and signpost patients who have presented with mental health difficulties. These range from acute psychosis to self-harm, suicidal thoughts, depression, dementia, anxiety and dual diagnosis (drug and alcohol related difficulties alongside mental health)
Within the hospital inpatient wards, the MHLT see patients with a wide range of mental health difficulties which at times could be impacting patient's recovery.
Our Mental Health Liaison Team is part of East Suffolk care group's crisis pathway. It works as a single point of access for referrals, providing a range of mental health specialties to patients of all ages. Our teams respond to a diverse range of referrals covering both the liaison and crisis assessment function. There is opportunity to work across the crisis pathway.
