Job summary

At Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust, we recognise the importance of ensuring that families and carers get the vital support they need when they have experienced a serious incident related to somebody they care for. As a result, we are looking to recruit two Family Liaison Officers.

The development of these two new roles follows, feedback from the people we serve and is fundamental to the work we are doing to improve our response and care to those bereaved and effected by patient safety incidents. We intend to do this by providing FLOs to support and guide families and carers. The FLOs will work alongside families supporting them if an investigation is required; they will provide information to families in a sensitive and compassionate manner, ensuring families are provided timely and accurate information during any investigation, with openness and transparency and to reflect the level of involvement they wish to have.

Aspects of the role will include the development and presentation of anonymised case studies; developing and facilitating training programmes, learning tools, events, workshops and best practice guidance. Fundamentally, this will be in co-production with families wherever possible. This will enable all clinical services to learn and improve their communication and engagement with families and carers, whilst ensuring there is a suitable and supportive process for families to be involved in learning outcomes and improvement work across the Trust.

Main duties of the job

Main duties of the job

  • Support families and carers through the investigation process that follows a serious incident related to a service user
  • Ensure that families and carers are treated with compassion and professionalism in respect to the individual needs
  • The post holders will be a main point of contact for individual families and carers and will work closely with the investigation officer assigned to the incident
  • Develop and deliver training for staff to help them learn and improve their communication and engagement with families
  • Working with the Trust's Participation Team facilitating co-production with bereaved families of learning outcomes and improvements
  • Working with empathy and compassion, especially when engaging and involving some of the most vulnerable individuals, who may not be able to fully express or articulate their thoughts or feelings.

These are important roles, pivotal to ensuring families and carers receive the support they need. As such, we are looking for dynamic, motivated and passionate candidates to develop and shape these roles within the Trust.
