Job summary

NSFT Secure and Forensic Mental Health Services have been consistently rated "Good" by the CQC and we aspire to continue our journey towards becoming an "Outstanding" service. Our inpatient secure services form part of a wide and growing body of clinical services operating in a variety of settings linked to criminal justice services. NSFT Secure Services offer low and medium secure mental health services for men, an innovative integrated secure mental health service for women, mental health services in our local prisons, community forensic services, criminal justice liaison and diversion services and Offender Personality Disorder services in partnership with probation services.

We are seeking a Physician Associate to join the team in our secure inpatient mental health service for men based at Northside House in Norwich.

Main duties of the job

You will become part of the multidisciplinary clinical team providing holistic mental and physical healthcare to our complex service users and will work flexibly with other members of the multidisciplinary and physical health teams. The Physician Associate role will work under the supervision and guidance of a Consultant Psychiatrist and their skills will complement other roles within the clinical teams.

- Conduct initial psychiatric assessments, take patient histories and perform physical examinations

- Establish differential diagnosis, making appropriate treatment plans under supervision

- Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, handovers and other relevant clinical meetings

- Treat patient and their family members using a high degree of empathy and advanced communication skills

- Respond in a timely way to requests to assess or review patients physical and / or mental health

- Record clinical notes about patient contacts and provide advice to staff on further management / investigations / interventions

- Review and summarise patient notes for the purposes of contributing to discharge summaries and reports.

- Undertake assessment and assistance to ward staff in the event of medical emergencies

- Work collaboratively with the relevant team

- Liaise with primary care and relevant secondary health care providers relating to a patients care or treatment

- Support health promotion activities including those relating to smoking, drugs and alcohol

- Contribute to the development of physical health competencies in mental health staff in a range of settings.

- Participate in undergraduate teaching- Support junior doctors on placement
