Job summary

Frenulotomy Practitioner - 15 hours

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our maternity team as a part time Frenulotomy practitioner working alongside the integrated infant feeding team (IIFT) to support families accessing the service.

The post holder will provide feeding support to families who are referred to the Frenulotomy service and be able to recognise deviations to the usual structure and function of the tongue that adversely affects infant feeding. The post holder will have undertaken the necessary training to be able to perform Frenulotomy on infants who require division.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will:

1. Support the Integrated Infant Feeding Team (IIFT) across Tameside and Glossop triaging families referred for review.

2. Support the Infant Feeding team to provide a service that will support improved breast feeding by performing a frenulotomy when indicated.

3. Will be competent to identify and accurately assess feeding, and alongside the Integrated Infant Feeding Team support with identifying problems that may be due to issues other than ankyloglossia.

4. Work closely with the IIFT to provide education to staff working in neonates/maternity and health visiting to be able to complete initial assessments and complete referrals to the service that will support continued breastfeeding by performing a frenulotomy when indicated.

5. Will work within their scope of practice and adhere to local and national policies in relation to frenulotomy (Ankyloglossia).

6. Will be competent in assessing tongue function and movement, and be competent to recognise unfamiliar anatomy of an infant's mouth and refer to ENT services as appropriate.

7. Support the IIFT in completing referrals to ENT for more complex abnormalities.

8. Provide a telephone follow-up service following division of a tongue tie.

9. Will participate in audits

10. Will provide evidence-based infant feeding support to women and their infants in line with UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative Standards.
