Job summary

Technical Instructor, Adult Speech and Language Therapy Band 3 7 Month Maternity Cover 36 hours per week

Due to maternity leave, we are looking for a friendly, enthusiastic individual who enjoys working as part of a team. This role provides crucial support to the rest of the Adult Speech and Language Therapy team. It requires real enjoyment of working with a variety of people and interest in rehabilitation.

We would be happy to try and organise this as a secondment opportunity for someone already working in the Trust who is interested in gaining some further experience in therapy and rehabilitation. There may be some flexibility in the exact hours to be worked, please contact us to discuss.

We work with a wide range of adults with difficulties in communication (e.g. due to stroke); swallowing difficulties; voice disorders; stammering; and Head and Neck cancer. Our working environment is both Acute at Tameside General Hospital; and Community in service users' own homes, Care Homes or Intermediate Care Facility.

We are a supportive team, keen on patient centred care and service development.

Main duties of the job

To assist the speech and language therapist in their job by:

? Carrying out programmes of activities to rehabilitate an adult's speech andlanguage difficulties? Helping in the running of groups? Preparing materials

SECTION 1- MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:PROFESSIONAL / CLINICAL:

To plan therapeutic interventions and modify and extend programmes of therapy.

To implement the carry-over of speech and language programmes as directed by the speech and language therapist including on wards and in clients own homes, carrying out speech therapy tasks and programmes to the requirements of therapists in the adult team.

To see adults individually on an in-patient, out-patient or domiciliary basis in order to carry out specific programmes as set by Speech and Language Therapist.

To take responsibility for own workload and arrange own timetable.

ADMINISTRATIVE / MANAGERIAL:

To prepare speech and language therapy rooms in readiness for therapy

To prepare speech and language therapy materials as requested by speech and language therapist

To ensure that all equipment and resources are maintained inreadiness for use.

Monitoring stock to ensure supplies are readily available for Speech and Language Therapists.

To carry out specific client-related administration tasks, e.g. photocopying of materials, booking appointments, making and receiving telephone calls as appropriate.

To be proficient in, and use as required, Boardmaker computer programme.To identify and prepare appropriate written material for clients, carers and others.

To record activities and complete statistical return as required.

To participate/undertake audit or surveys as appropriate.

To appreciate limitations of role and seek assistance/advice as appropriate.To be familiar with and adhere to Trust, Directorate and Departmental policies and procedures.

HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGEMENT:

To provide peer support to other technical instructors and assistants.

To assist in the induction of newly qualified speech and language therapists.

To deliver aspects of training according to pre-agreed and designed plan in conjunction with the therapist.

To assist speech and language therapist in identifying training needs of others, e.g. carers, colleagues.

SECTION 2- KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

To liaise with carers and other professionals (e.g. therapists, nurses) regarding clients progress and management, where tact and sensitivity are required, and report back to the speech and language therapist.

To have good interpersonal and communication skills, and to be able to relate well to both clients and professionals.

To overcome barriers to communication in working with clients and their families/carers; some clients will have significant difficulties with speech, language and communication. Some may also have hearing impairments, learning difficulties or psychological or emotional difficulties.

To understand basic approaches to encouraging speech,language and communication in adults; this includes working with adults on an individual basis.

To monitor clients progress and to evaluate their response to the SLT activities.

To use well developed listening and visual observation skills with clients and others in a range of settings.

To demonstrate a willingness to learn about communication, swallowing and SLT in adults, and develop through participation in a range of activities (e..g. individual study, attendance at short courses).

To collect evidence of CPD by use of a portfolio and participate in the Trusts appraisal process.

To facilitate personal development by attending Assistants SIG meetings where available/appropriate.

To carry out specified observation and information gathering to contribute to therapists assessment.

To assist in the running of groups for adults with speech and language difficulties.

To transport required equipment, e.g. assessment/therapy/training materials, between various venues on a regular basis.

To maintain concentration during therapy sessions in order to make accurate observations.

To maintain sensitivity during sessions with adults with e.g. stroke/barriers to understanding.

Exposure to emotional situations/emotional involvement.

Sitting/standing in restricted positions for lengths of time (e.g. hospital bedsides).

Travelling around the community will entail time spent out of doors in inclement weather e.g awaiting access to clients homes.

The post holder will work in a range of settings including inpatient wards, Care Homes and patients own homes.

Some articulatory and phonology therapy and mealtime observations will expose the post holderto saliva and halitosis.

The post holder may encounter verbal and physical aggression.
