Job summary

Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust seeks to appoint a specialty doctor in Diabetes and Endocrinology to work within our Adult Medicine department. The post holder will be based at Tameside General Hospital. The post is based within the Department of Medicine and the main activity undertaken will include outpatient clinics, ward rounds and on calls for general internal medicine.

The Diabetes and Endocrinology department has a range of facilities:

  • Diabetes and General Internal Medicine Ward (Ward 46 with 24 beds).
  • Community Diabetes clinics
  • Antenatal Diabetes clinics
  • Diabetes Transition clinics
  • Endocrinology outpatient service
  • Diabetic Foot Clinic

There are 2 Diabetes and Endocrinology Consultants within the department:

  • Prof E Jude - Consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology
  • Dr N Arabi - Consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology

Main duties of the job

  1. To participate in various outpatient activities including the medical management of patients attending outpatient clinics.
  2. Ensuring the effective organisation of the ward including diagnosis and treatment of all patients admitted.
  3. The appropriate discharge of patients, including providing timely paperwork to the General Practitioner ensuring a continuation of care following discharge.
  4. The direct clinical supervision and training of the Ward Junior Medical Staff as well as the organisation and delegation of clinical work.
  5. The monitoring of the quality of service given by the Diabetes and Endocrinology Department, which will include clinical audits.
  6. Active participation at various committees and working groups.
  7. Participation in development of medical treatment protocols.
  8. Professional supervision under Consultant guidance aiming to encourage the development of all doctors within the Emergency Services and Critical Care Division.
  9. Contributing to the provision of reports for the Coroner, Police Statements and for Complaints management adhering to time frames.
  10. Complying with all relevant Trust Policies and Procedures.
  11. To undertake regular on call duties for acute medical on call rota.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will be clinically and educationally responsible to the Consultants working across the Diabetes and Endocrinology Department.

The post holder will support the Diabetes and Endocrinology / Adult Medicine department:

6. Job Plan

6.1 Hours of duty are the equivalent of 10 Programmed Activities per week plus on-call allowance.

6.2 Clinical sessions to be based in Outpatients or in admitted areas as required

7.1 Our Postgraduate Medical Centre has a very full and comprehensive medical programme, which the post holder is encouraged to participate in.

7.2 The Trust fully supports continuing professional development as recommended by the Royal College of Physicians.

7.3 Candidates will be supported to pursue specialist registration in the speciality of cardiology via the CESR route.

8. Conditions of Service

8.1 This post is covered by the terms and conditions of service of the Trust, which currently follow those laid down by the Hospital Medical and Dental Staff (England and Wales) Terms and Conditions of Service and General Medical Council.

8.2 The post is whole-time and currently works on the full shift rota with prospective cover.

Any extra duty worked over and above contracted hours should be taken as time off in lieu.
