Senior Business Intelligence Developer

An exciting and innovative development opportunity has arisen within the Information Department based at Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS FT which is committed to developing its information capability to help support effective decision making.

The post of the Senior Business Intelligence Developer is pivotal to supporting the Trust-wide strategic Data Warehouse and reporting/dashboard solutions in Microsoft Power BI. Reporting to the Head of Business Intelligence and working alongside other Developers you will play a key role in developing, maintaining and extending the current dashboards and self-service reports to meet the detailed and varied information and reporting needs of the organisation.

Main duties of the job

In addition to being an excellent SQL and report developer, you will need to have adequate technical skills, particularly in SSRS, Microsoft Power BI and Python, with desirable skills in Power Platform and SharePoint gained through working in a data management and information delivery environment. You will possess excellent communication skills and ensure tasks are delivered on time. Be proactive and innovative in your approach to problem solving and deliver tailored solutions.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Data Warehouse

  1. Design, code, test and implement efficient T-SQL scripts, Views and Stored Procedures, as part of Data Warehouse development.
  2. Proactively manage and administrate the integrity of data within the Warehouses: investigating, raising and resolving issues with the appropriate Trust managers.
  3. Responsible for monitoring the technical performance of the Data Warehouse, where poor performance is identified lead on the analysis and development of new ways of working to improve efficiency.
  4. Developing the Data Warehouse to fulfil the requirements of a Business Intelligence System i.e., it should support intelligent decision-making.
  5. Ensure all information outputs of the Data Warehouse are accurate, fit for purpose and delivered to the appropriate timescales.
  6. Ensure that documentation is developed and maintained for the Data Warehouse.
  7. Working with other aspects of SQL Server namely SSDT and utilise SSIS to develop new data sources and maintain existing ones.
  8. Promote and champion the use of the information contained within the Data Warehouse.
  9. Development of future data sources into the Data Warehouse.
  10. Understanding concepts and regularly research into new technologies around Cloud computing namely Microsoft Azure, Power Apps and Power Automate. In addition, any knowledge and experience with Microsoft Fabric would be desirable.
  11. Ensure any BI software purchases e.g., SQL Server Management Studio, Visual Studio for SSDT and Redgate are well within the BI budget allocation and the financial responsibility of procurement of any systems that have a Business Intelligence functionality.
  12. Working with the Head of BI in the planning and structure of the Business Intelligence team within the allocated resources and budget constraints to ensure a highly productive tool and team are built that delivers against the Trust BI strategy.
Reporting and Dashboard Development
  1. Design and develop highly sophisticated and interactive dashboards (in Power BI) and reports from data held within the various Trust IT systems including the extraction of data from current non-DW systems such as Finance, HR and Governance.
  2. Provide expert advice and support in the use of IT systems; undertake data analysis using T-SQL, and develop automated reports using SSRS (SQL Server Reporting Services).
  3. Develop drill-through dashboards to meet user requirements to replace (on an automated basis) the need for some existing manual reports.
  4. Interrogate live information systems as appropriate and maintain and interrogate stand-alone databases for the production of information reports which are not supported by the Trusts PAS.
  5. Key to the role, you will provide and receive sensitive or contentious data. For example, data related patients care (including details of End of Life Care) and data related to staff employment including sickness data and payroll data.
  6. Produce, analyse and interpret highly complex statistical information and facts that are derived from various data source options to large groups of users (both internal and external) in a clear and understandable way in the way of formal presentations.
  7. To ensure thorough documentation and change control processes are in place, accessible and maintained for all processes and developments.
