Job summary

Orthodontic Therapist - Band 6 - 4.5 hours per week

Provide an orthodontic service implementing care plans and performing non-complex orthodontic procedures.

Provide a specialist contribution to the clinical management of patients requiring orthodontic treatment working in collaboration with multidisciplinary professionals in order to improve patient care.

Facilitate, participate in audit and quality assurance programme, and promote evidence based practice.

Responsible for the teaching, mentoring and assessment of students in the department, trainees and professional staff therefore promoting a learning culture.

The post is an integral part of the multidisciplinary team, responsible for specialised clinical skills. The job holder is accountable for own actions within their scope of practice as determined by the General Dental Council without direct supervision (in line with British Orthodontic Society Guidelines).

Main duties of the job

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Clinical

  1. Analytical and Judgmental Skills- To safely carry out orthodontic therapy duties within Trust policies as requested by the Orthodontist, procedures and guidelines reporting to the Patient Service Manager and providing feedback of issues or concerns

The post holder would be expected to make judgements on a range of facts or situations which require analysis or comparison of a range of options

  1. Ensuring patients meet the oral health standards for ongoing treatment. Assess oral health education needs of each patient providing individual advice and information in orthodontic procedures as appropriate. Use risk assessment skills to identify when there may be potential for damage to oral health and soft tissues of the oral cavity
  2. Discuss and inform patients of the indications for ongoing treatment. Discuss risks, benefits of treatment and possible additional procedures required
  3. Safely carry out basic orthodontic procedures as requested by the orthodontist

We are also a specialist training centre with two post-graduate students linked to the Central Manchester training programme.

  • Experience of clinical management processes and good organisational skills e.g management of patient booking system, photograph storage etc.
  • Computer skills
  • Managerial/supervisory experience.

Desirable

  • Clinical experience as an orthodontic therapist
  • Orthodontic Nursing Certificate in Oral health.
  • Certificate in Dental Radiography, including a good knowledge of IRMER regulations
  • Clinical ability to summarise and prepare cases for MDT clinics
  • Ability to support the team with governance processes such as COSHH and health and safety
