Job summary

Newborn Hearing Screener - 25.5 hours per week

We are looking for an experienced Newborn Hearing Screener to join our friendly Newborn Hearing Screening Team here at Tameside Hospital.

Evidence of having completed the relevant Level 3 Diploma for Health Screeners or equivalent recent Newborn Hearing Screening Experience is essential for this role.

We are a small team based on the Neonatal Unit, working to support the early detection of permanent Childhood hearing impairments across all areas within Maternity.

Providing a 7 day service, working across maternity, Neonatal Unit and holding twice weekly clinics.

Main duties of the job

To work as a member of the team undertaking the hearing screening of newborn babies, under the supervision of the NHSP Local Manager. To gather and accurately record clinical and test data relevant to the screening process. This post will involve direct handling of newborn babies and contact with parents.

Job responsibilities

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical

To identify babies born that require a screen.

To ensure all parents of babies born and/or living in the Tameside area are offered a Hearing screen. Gaining parental consent, performing the screen and informing parents of the results.

Undertake hearing screening using specialised automated equipment Automated Otoacoustic Emissions (Otoport) and Automated Auditory Brainstem Responses (Algo3i)

To gather and accurately record clinical and test data relevant to the screening process.

To promote the principles of a family friendly service by ensuring that parents and carers are given clear and accurate information regarding the hearing screening programme at all times.

To maintain effective methods of communication in a professional, welcoming and caring environment.

To ensure the safety and security of equipment at all times and report any problems to the Hearing Screening Manager at the earliest opportunity

Refer clinical decisions outside own experience to line manager and/or to other healthcare professional.

To maintain confidentiality at all times.

To ensure patients and families retain their dignity, privacy and individuality at all times.

Communication

To liaise effectively with parents to ensure that screening outcomes are delivered correctly, overcoming barriers to understanding where English is not the parents first language. Whilst maintaining confidentiality at all times.

To recognise the importance of personal contribution to the team and the wider professional network.

To establish effective working relationships with other team members and contribute to team meetings

To inform and liaise with the NHSP Local Manager on all aspects of hearing screening related to your role.

Administration and Clerical

Enter data on to the National Patient database.

Arrange clinic appointments and distribute system generated letters from the National Patient database.

Participate in the monitoring of stock

Participate in clinical governance and training to improve the quality of the service.

Safeguarding Children & Adults

Understand and work within policies and local procedures relating to Safeguarding Children and the Protection of Vulnerable Adults.

Health & Safety

You will be required to follow risk management procedures at all times. The risk management procedures for the Trust and the department are kept by the departmental manager.

Manual Handling

Manoeuvre light goods and equipment in accordance with manual handling regulations and good practice
