Assistant Patient Safety Officer - Band 6 - 37.5 - Permanent

The Assistant Patient Safety Officer is a key member of the clinical audit & effectiveness team, working with the Patient Safety Officer to ensure that there is an effective and robust Clinical Audit Programme which leads to improvements in patient care.

The post holder will provide expert advice and guidance on all aspects of clinical audit to Divisional Teams across the organisation, ensuring that clinical audit activity is appropriately supported by the clinical audit & effectiveness team.

This is a full time, permanent role.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will assist the Patient Safety Officer in ensuring that the Trust meets its legislative requirements, external standards and the Trust corporate objectives in relation to clinical audit & effectiveness.

You will provide expert advice and guidance in all aspects of clinical audit to Divisional Teams and colleagues across the organisation.

You will supervise, support and develop the clinical audit & effectiveness team, ensuring that clinical audit activity is in line with best practice and leads to improvements in patient care.

Action and learning from clinical audit results is essential and you will be working with Divisional Teams and the clinical audit & effectiveness team to develop, implement & monitor SMART (Specific, Measureable, Achievable, Relevant, Timely) action plans.

Job responsibilities

  • Assist the Patient Safety Officer in ensuring that the Trust meets its legislative requirements, external standards and the Trust corporate objectives in relation to clinical audit & effectiveness.
  • Provide expert advice and guidance on all aspects of clinical audit to Divisional Teams and colleagues across the organisation.
  • Supervise, support and develop the clinical audit & effectiveness team, ensuring that clinical audit activity is in line with best practice and leads to improvements in patient care.
  • Assist the Patient Safety Officer with service development for clinical audit & effectiveness.
  • Support implementation of the Clinical Audit & Effectiveness Strategy and Policy and NICE Policy across the organisation.
  • Contribute to the effective integration of clinical audit & effectiveness with other quality, governance and accountability programmes and functions.
  • Work closely with the Divisional Teams, ensuring review, scrutiny and appropriate presentation/dissemination of clinical audit results and trend/benchmarking data.
  • Support action and learning from clinical audit results, working with Divisional Teams and the clinical audit team to develop, implement & monitor SMART (Specific, Measureable, Achievable, Relevant, Timely) action plans.
  • Assist the Patient Safety Officer in ensuring that the Trust meets its legislative requirements, external standards and the Trust corporate objectives.
  • Co-ordinate the conduct of complex organisation wide and high profile clinical audit projects.
  • Undertake clinical audit activity where required, including project design, data collection, data analysis, report writing and presentation of results.
  • Monitor the provision of Trust Assurance of clinical audit activity and generate progress/performance reports.
  • Provide effective and appropriate clinical audit training and guidance to staff at all levels across the organisation.
  • Attend meetings and events on behalf of the clinical audit & effectiveness team, both external and within the organisation.
  • Maintain effective relationships with key stakeholders in the organisations Clinical Audit Pogramme e.g. national audit providers, Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership (HQIP).

  • Extensive clinical audit knowledge and skills gained through facilitation of a wide range of national and local clinical audit projects.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to develop effective working relationships with staff at all levels throughout the organisation.
  • Experience of supervising and developing colleagues.
  • Excellent written communication skills with experience of writing clinical audit reports, presentations and action plans.
  • High level of attention to detail with ability to accurately analyse complex data sets, validate data and interpret/present results.
  • Experience of supporting/advising multidisciplinary teams in relation to clinical audit projects.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office packages e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.
  • Experience of developing and delivering training in clinical audit.
