Job responsibilities

1. MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

CLINICAL/PROFESSIONAL

1.1 Perform advanced physiotherapeutic assessment of patients with diverse presentations and complex conditions, to provide an accurate diagnosis and develop and deliver an individualised treatment programme.

1.2 To be responsible for your own caseload and a defined area of service, working without direct supervision. Supervision takes the form of regular formal training and clinical reasoning sessions, peer review and case conferences. Access to advice and support from a senior physiotherapist is available if required, clinical work is not routinely evaluated.

1.3 To undertake all aspects of clinical duties as an autonomous practitioner.

1.4 Undertake evidence based audit and research projects to further own and teams clinical practice within each rotation. Make recommendations to clinical team leaders for changes to practice. May lead the implementation of specific changes to practice or contribute to service guidelines.

1. RESPONSIBILITY FOR PATIENT CARE

2.1 Be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of own work load, including the management of your patient episode of care.

2.2 Undertake a comprehensive assessment of patients including those with diverse or complex presentations/multiple pathologies; use advanced clinical reasoning skills and manual techniques, to provide an accurate diagnosis of their condition.

2.3 Formulate and deliver individual physiotherapy treatment programmes based on a sound knowledge of evidence based practice and treatment options using clinical assessment, reasoning skills and knowledge of treatment skills.

2.4 Take delegated responsibility from the Inpatient Team Leader for managing patients with particular conditions to be responsible for providing specialist physiotherapy assessment and treatment plans for patients with these conditions within each rotation

2.5 Formulate accurate prognosis and recommend best course of intervention, developing comprehensive discharge plans.

2.6 Assess patient and carers outcome of treatment proposals, gain valid informed consent and have the capacity to work within a legal framework with patients who lack the capacity to consent to treatment.

2.7 Evaluate patient progress, reassess and change treatment programmes as appropriate.

2.8 Discuss with patient and carers outcome of treatment and prognosis. This may involve breaking unwelcome news.

2.9 When working on the weekend/Bank Holiday duty rota, undertake the assessment and treatment of acutely ill patients with respiratory problems, who may have a complex presentation and maintain associated records as an autonomous practitioner.

3.1 Be responsible for maintaining own competency to practice through CPD activities, and maintain a portfolio which reflects personal development.

3.2 Be responsible for supervising students in the absence of senior staff.

3.3 Delegate work appropriately to junior physiotherapists and assistants.

3.4 Maintain and develop current knowledge of evidence-based practice in the areas of each rotation, developing specialist knowledge of particular conditions and patient type.

3.5 Participate in staff appraisal scheme as an appraisee and be responsible for complying with your agreed personal development to meet set objectives and competencies.

1. RESPONSIBLITIES FOR PHYSICAL AND FINANCIAL RESOURCES

4.1 To be responsible for the safe and competent use of all equipment, patient appliances and aids by patients and ensure that junior staff/assistants attain competency prior to use.

1. COMMUNICATIONS AND LEADERSHIP

5.1 Use a range of verbal and non-verbal communication tools to communicate effectively with patients to progress rehabilitation and treatment programmes. This will include those who have difficulties in understanding or communicating, for example who may be dysphasic, depressed, deaf, blind or who may be unable to accept their diagnosis.

5.2 When working on the emergency duty on-call rota, provide advice to medical and nursing staff and other members of the multi-disciplinary team regarding patients respiratory and chest functions/conditions.

5.3 To be responsible for maintaining accurate and comprehensive patient treatment records in line with the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy standards of practice.

5.4 To be able to compose written advice to patients and carers and develop patient information leaflets, referring to Inpatient Team Leader or Clinical Specialists when necessary.

5.5 To liaise with others concerning the care of patients for whom they are responsible.

5.6 To be able to impart relevant knowledge to specific patient groups in appropriate terminology for patient comprehension.

1. POLICY AND SERVICE DEVELOPMENT

6.1 Work within clinical guidelines and have a good working knowledge of national and local standards and monitor own and others quality of practice as appropriate.

6.2 Assess and manage clinical risk within your own area.

PLANNING AND ORGANISING

7.1 Be responsible for the supervision and co-ordination of junior staff, students and assistants on a daily basis as required by the Inpatient Team Leader.

7.2 Ensure that you own practice and that of staff under your supervision meet the required professional standards of Physiotherapy practice.

7.3 Deputise for the Inpatient Team Leader in their absence taking responsibility for operational management of the team, allocating and organising the work of junior and assistant staff to meet service on a daily basis.

7.4 To be responsible for organising and planning own caseload to meet service and patient priorities in an unpredictable environment.

7.5 To be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of department routine procedures e.g. ordering equipment.

1. ANALYSIS AND DATA MANAGEMENT

8.1 Analyse & present data collected during audit or research activities.

8.2 Collect activity data including data for korner returns.

1. RESEARCH, DEVELOPMENT AND AUDIT

9.1 Undertake evidence-based projects and develop improvements to service delivery and clinical practice, making recommendation for change to the Therapy Services Manager.

9.2 Undertake the measurement and evaluation of your work and current practices through the use of evidence based practice projects, audit and outcome measures, either individually or with more senior physiotherapists.

9.3 Be an active member of the in service training programme by attendance at and participation in, in-service training programmes, tutorials, individual training sessions, external courses and peer review.

9.4 To undertake as directed the collection of data for use in service audit and research projects. To manage and undertake research into specific areas of clinical practice and service delivery using a range of research methodologies as part of MDT audit and departmental research initiatives.

9.5 Be actively involved in professional clinical groups.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

• Degree in Physiotherapy
• HCPC Registration
• Evidence of CPD maintained in a portfolio including attendance at recent postgraduate courses relevant to the clinical fields in rotations.
• Evidence of respiratory competence
• Evidence of competence in core areas of Physiotherapy

Desirable

• Membership of C.S.P.
• Involvement with special Clinical Interest Group

• Broad clinical experience as a junior demonstrating Knowledge in Out Patients, Medicine, Respiratory, Neurological and Critical Care.

• Contributing to clinical education of less experienced staff or students or assistants.
